What bottle of wine did you open today? (Part 2)

It was great, Beeson is one of my favorite bedrocks. Softened a bit on day 2, but I enjoyed it on both days

I was making gnocchi with gorgonzola sauce and toasted walnuts along with turkey meatballs for a few friends coming over tonight. I was looking through cellar tracker for a red to pair with this (knowing that I would probably be the only one to drink white with this meal). Browsing through CT, I found this bottle;

Zaha Malbec 2014
This bottle of “WTF is this doing in my cellar” is the only one I have and I’ve never tried this producer or any producers Argentinian Malbec. You can call it a blind spot, I call it foresight.

I read through the CT tasting notes and most suggested a plush wine with little structure. I thought this might pair with the meal and figured this was as good a time as any to try this.

Definitely not my cup of tea but not a badly made wine. I opened a couple of hours in advance and as time went on the nose added some dried herbs to the pungent fruit, vanilla and pie spices. The tannins are fully integrated (were there tannins?) but the little acidity does help keep the fruit on the red spectrum (red berries, plums). The oak is not overbearing and there is no overt sweetness. This was a hit with the guests.

This is made by Alejandro Sejanovich. He is behind many, maybe 10?, labels in Argentina. Pretty much across the board they get high pointy praise, at least from Luis of the Advocate. I practically never drink Malbec so I never tried this. I did the Zaha cab franc. Similar to your note, not offensive but not enough to bring me back to a second bottle. Most of his wines are right down the middle, hence probably what appealed to your guests. I give him credit for consistent quality across so many wines from different areas. There are a few that were repeat buys for me but overall the wines lack character. I mentioned to someone who knows Alejandro that I thought the wines had the feel of being made in the winery more than the vineyard and he said, no, Ale sees himself first as an agronomist.

Lafarge Volnay 1er Clos des ChĂȘnes 2017

  • This is really doing it for me, mashed strawberries and other red fruit, freshly tilled soil, well structured with length to burn. Beautiful fine tannins lend texture. This wine is a pleasure right now.

lovely warm spring day and it felt like Riesling time.

the 2009 Oberhauser Brucke was in the zone. Lovely mid yellow, bright and fresh with toast and honey and ripe yellow stone fruit. Good acidity and nice long finish. This was a joy to drink

When in Rome, or Nashville, on a business trip, one must do as the natives do

We also had a magnum of 2018 Opus. I will admit not to get it, it was very primary and “grape-y” and not enjoyable at all. The table seemed to like it, although I don’t know if that is because of the juice or the label. I had half a glass.

Mind if I ask where in Nashville? I have to travel there for work a bit.

Four Seasons downtown. It is a gorgeous hotel and the service is impeccable.

Outstanding in every way 2001 Jadot Clos Saint Jacques was preceded by pure, rich and nervy 21 PYCM Monthelie. Nightcaps consisted of silky, red fruited, almost Burgundian 2017 Vietti Castiglione. To finish fresh acid driven 2016 Gunderloch Rothenberg Riesling Auslese, that had a degree of reduction that never really dissipated.

Had this 2 months ago and had a similar experience. This wine is incredible and in a great spot at the moment.

Last night I had sip tastes of about a dozen and a half red Burgundy wines from the 2022 and 2023 vintages at a local tasting event. I am trying to take advantage of opportunities like this to help fill in my nearly vacant lot of Burgundy knowledge and drinking experience. Examples of regional, village level, and some 1er cru. Here are some that stood out.

2023 Domaine de Marsoif Bourgogne Epineuil Rouge “Croix des Templiers” ~$30
2022 Domaine de Petits Lins Beaune ~$40
-Two wines with no pretensions, but very enjoyable sips. The Marsoif was brighter and more delicate, the Petits Lins offered deeper fruit, and some earthy mineral. I noted that Marsoif is from an area that is close to Tonnere in Chablis.

2022 Domaine Chevrot Santeney 1er Cru Clos Rousseau ~$50
2022 Justin Girardin Santenay Vielles Vignes ~$70
-Two Santenay wines that upped the quality and and complexity, also showed the contrast of a more delicate, brighter fruited and sharper minerality in the Chevrot, compared to the fuller, darker fruit and earthy iron in the Girardin. I preferred the latter last night. I noted that the price and classification were not strictly correlated with quality of enjoyment.

2023 Domaine de Villaine Mercurey Les Montots ~$80
2022 Francois Millet et Fils Fixin En L’Olivier ~$90
2023 Domaine de la Pousse d’Or Chambolle-Musigny ~$110
-These three were approaching “oh my” levels. All were wines that you wanted to sit with a bit. I don’t recall all the stories behind these, but a couple of these were unicorn like. Very, very nice wines

Another full-day layover at CDG, a quick RER jaunt into the city and late bovine lunch with these at The Butcher of Paris, 4 days ago.

A property whose products pleased than most natural wines I’ve had, because of their heftier mouthfeel, pure-honest fruit, and sufficient understated complexities. These were no exceptions.

This morning I took delivery of three bottles of 2014 Chevillon Cailles. Temporarily put them in a rack in the dining room. I had a long board meeting tonight, came home at 10:30 and all three bottles are in recycling :persevere:
