What bottle of wine did you open today? (Part 2)

2014, I have edited the note.

2006 Lopez de Heredia Bosconia Reserva - still young and a bit overtly oaky, but other than that so delicious.

2012 Force Majeure Force Majeure Vineyard Red Mountain Syrah,

Mature. Will hold for a while, but at or near peak right now. Blue and red fruit, pepper, bacon fat. Very fine tannins, with just a touch of a pleasantly chalky finish. Very enjoyable with a filet.

2017 Andremily EABA. Had this is the decanter for 5+ hours and in the fridge to slightly chill before serving. Better without food than with.

Fabulous showing. Toasted brioche honey and citrus on the nose. The palate was a kaleidoscope of white yellow and red fruit with great cut and a long finish. Still quite young, but delicious.

Like many others I have it found long cellaring of Brunellos to be neither very reliable nor beneficial. More than a few 2010s i have had recently lacked freshness and were merely ok.

So I an starting on my 2015s and 2016s.

This is lovely bottle, open and generous with a bit of leather and dried cherry and then lots of derk fruits. Decent acidity and moderate tannins. I think I will work on the rest of the 5 pack over the next 2 years or so.

Indeed, this is a lovely bottle. I agree that it shows a lot of the Rayas perfume and weightless power - and for a relatively modest price.

2011 Bodega Yacochuya Tannat “Coquena” (Tolombon, Cafayate Valley, Salta, Argentina)

From a bottle that probably never spent a moment in the last 5+ years at cellar temperature.

The cork was in very good condition and came out very easily. Decanted two hours and drunk over the next hour.

Dark, dark, dark ruby color. Aromas of scorched earth, cherry liqueur, ripe raspberry, and black olive. Full bodied, concentrated, and energetic on the palate with plump tannins. Slightly grippy but very long finish.

My previous bottle last year was a bit greener, but this was very satisfying, especially at the ~$25 I paid for it at a shop in New Haven that isn’t geeky at all. This lacked the aromatic transparency of good middle-aged Bordeaux, but it scratched a similar itch. Drink 2025-2035.

Bodegas Beriona GR Rioja 2010
I’ll take the plunge and say of a 15 year old Rioja GR that it’s as good as it’ll get. But it’s good enough. Plenty of fruit, the oak is in a decent spot, lively acidity, great food companion, good wine, very good QPR.

We emptied the Lokita and did good work on the Montelobos.

From two nights ago technically, when we were at More e Macine in La Morra.

2019 Elio Sandri Barolo Riserva Perno

Cool and serene on the nose and palate, with mixed berries, spearmint, and fresh herbs with violet undertones. Understated but compact on the palate, with a long finish of anise, leather, and dried florals covered by black cherry and plum fruit. With air this becomes nicely integrated. Even after a couple hours with the earth, leather, and amaro spice notes building in intensity the fruit hasn’t shut down. Will have to look for this stateside.

There’s pretty much a consensus that Reynaud truly excels in fresh vintages. And indeed, those tend to be my favorite ones.

Totally agree, hence my love of 2008 and 2011. Looks like 2014 is falling in that path as well. These vintages are so incredibly aromatic under his management. By comparison, had a 2010 a few months ago, and while excellent, it’s not the vintage I would chase at those prices.

How is 2016 turning out?

2016: only bought one vacqueras until now and haven’t opened it yet.
As for 2010, I’ve got just one Rayas and it still feels like it needs plenty more time, so I’m definitely holding.

2018 Duroché Gevrey-Chambertin “Au Champ”

Dense, almost overpowering nose , ripe fruit verging on heavy. Palate turns sharp and mineral, the two never really connect. Third bottle showing the same imbalance… glad I’ve only got a few left in the cellar.

Couple of nuggets last night. Thiriet often over-delivers. This '20 one just delivered- solid but foursquare perhaps. '21 Guyon was fantastic at this level with 30mins of air.

Thatcher’s sells this. I buy it regularly

Just opened. A touch of bottle sickness blew off quickly. Still showing fruit and a light dash of spice alongside earthy, developed notes.

How was that Beeson I had been eyeing that one
