Tran squeezed everyone out of the cocktail thread?
Sloe down, big fella.
I bought this and had it on the rocks, and then in a gin and tonic, thin slice of lime, fever tree indian, same test as always. This Hendrick’s Grand Cabaret is very non-traditional. First, it smells overtly sweet. Second, it lacks even a hint of your piney or even citric gin nose, carrying instead a sweet apricot/peach note that calls to mind schnapps. It is silky smooth and delightful on the rocks, and would likely rock a cocktail pretty well. Cranberry plus sparkling wine makes sense for a fun summer drink.
The thing is, peach and apricot don’t go very well with lime. So while this may work with tonic, it did not work in my classic gin and tonic. I’d want a dried orange wheel or something like that instead of a lime. This is a bit like a Hundred Acre Cab for me. It’s big, its rich, it’s sweet tasting, and it’s well made, but I’m not sure it’s really my jams. I don’t anticipate reaching for this for a G&T anytime soon. Maybe after dinner on a lazy saturday night in a double rocks with crushed ice.
I forgot about this bottle!
I like a little sliver of grapefruit in my g&t. I wonder if it would work with this gin.
I’ll have to play around now that I remember that we have it. Definitely non-traditional.
Looking online, it is recommended in a French 75, which I could see and will most likely try.
Also, a cranberry spritz with cranberry juice and sparkling, which you mentioned. Good for summer and brunch.
I haven’t seen this one in our market, my wife loves Neptunia. Will keep an eye out, sounds interesting.
Thanks for posting Abbie
My favorite summer G&T. Just about to transition from the Lime/Thyme G&T.
Man, slice of lemon with a sprig of thyme and fever tree indian is killer with Alkkemist Gin from spain. Can sub rosemary for the thyme, but it’s a really nice pairing.
Haven’t had Alkkemist, will definitely look for it. Actually just looked and my local store has it. Thanks!
The traditional start of G&T season starts tomorrow. Not that anyone bother with rules like that anymore. Having a Hard Shore/Fever Tree G&T for a head start. BTW what proportions do you all use?
Astor sells it. Other shops too.
Thankfully.
My post was from 2010!
I know, a few “Navy Strength” gins available now.
I was laughing just yesterday because I noticed on the side of Q lite tonic it suggested 1&1/2 oz of Gin per 1 full can
That can would last me Ten drinks if I could, so I always end up throwing the rest away. Lots of ice and A splash is all I like.
And yes the season is here. Walked into a store today and they were on clearance for $1.59 so I cleaned them out.
I probably prefer the fever tree light but I use so little it doesn’t really matter.
tonight was 5/3 and the tonic wasn’t chilled; too dilute but probably due to the ice melt. I’m not fond of the light tonics, especially the FT Mediterranean. I like the little FT cans, but I’m not sure there is a wide choice.
What store?
I’m sorry I missed this until now. Thanks for posting…looks like I’m going to do some experimenting over the holiday weekend.
If I’m doing my math right, the martini recipe that I make most often comes out at 37.5% alcohol. I like this martini quite a bit, but more than one is a no-no. Really interested in experimenting to with martini’s that are closer to 32%.
We use the Hayman’s Navy Strength at 57%. It’s cheaper and seems easier to get than Plymouth. I’ve always liked a decent amount of vermouth in my martini, stirred in a metal Boston shaker. The chilled glass is essential and we’ve switched to “Nick and Nora” glasses from Riedel cocktail glasses. Cuts down on waste. I should compare Hayman’s with Plymouth this weekend. Lemon twist prepared using a serrated peeler. I’m not crazy about the Australian Navy Strength Gin, Pillars. I think I have another bottle of Ki No Bi Navy Strength.
The article was fascinating…I like the idea of Navy Strength with a higher amount of vermouth.
I prefer a nick and nora glass as well when I’m in a restaurant. But at home I have some vintage coupes that I love and I just don’t have the room for more glassware, so I stick with the coupe at home. FWIW, I can’t stand the traditional martini glass. Here’s a shot of an Alaska in one of those vintage coupes.
I think mine end up being 1:2. One of those little cans makes 2 drinks.
I tried the Hendrick’s Grand Cabaret last night with the Q elderflower tonic, and it ended up being a really nice combo. Sweeter/fruitier than a typical g&t due to the apricot/peach in the gin, but very refreshing.
