Your Gin?

My wife would love that glass. The Nick and Nora glasses are space efficient and fit in the freezer well (little room given the Flannery and Morgan Ranch).

It’s interesting when a drink strays from the norm. Our expectations can sometimes get in the way of enjoying it. I had a “white sangria” at a dockside pub the other afternoon. It was a terrible sangria but a delicious refreshing fruit cocktail! I almost sent it back but came around after three or four sips. The sunny afternoon helped.

This gin sounds revolting at first read but your note suggests it could make some nice summer drinks.

Looking for a new gin to try for making G&Ts and Negronis. Recently have used Tanqueray 10 and The Botanist, with both my wife and I preferring the T-10.

Would love to hear some other options.

Hendricks basic is good dual purpose.

If you haven’t yet I’d start with Sipsmith for London dry in both but especially the Negroni which I think really works best with London dry.

If you want to try a twist on Negroni I quite like Cappelletti instead of Campari.

For G&T. Garnish with mint

2oz No. 10 Tanqueray with a 2" ice ball, 10oz tonic and ¼ lime rimmed and crushed in a frozen pint glass.

Is it summer yet?

Summer no, but it’s G&T season. 5 to 1 ratio? I had no idea there is a cask or Navy strength #10 Tank.

Ki No Bi
Silent Pool
Berry Bros No. 3
Alkkemist
Sipsmith
Gray Whale
Gin Mare
Isle of Harris

Isle of Harris probably most herbaceous flavor of those, but all are good for a gin and tonic, and all are a bit different stylistically. Silent Pool also makes a brilliant martini. Ki No Bi among best gins on the market. Gray Whale a fun flavor in a G&T, unique but not annoyingly so. Sipsmith is classic and classy gin done right. Gin Mare more body, No. 3 more brightness, Alkkemist nice with a lemon and rosemary sprig, good and clean for the summer.

We like Monkey 47 Gin from Germany in G&T’s
Also, in the rotation is Plymouth Navy Strength and Martin Miller Westbourne Strength.

I bought a bottle of Nordes Gin (Spanish) a few weeks ago with the intention of trying it out with G&T’s. I have to say that I didn’t love it. It’s on the sweet side. I’m still a sucker for the Tanqueray profile.

Really like Silent Pool, Sipsmith, Gray Whale and Gin Mare. I like the Gin Mare Capri for G&Ts quite a bit.

Interesting. I was unaware of the Capri bottling. I’ll have to seek it out.

It’s pretty good. I have that one too for G&Ts. Altmayer knows what’s up.

It is distilled from albarino, so it’s a bit different. Try this variation - Nordes, Albarino wine, tonic, fresh bay leaf, lime slice. It is a truly excellent summer sipper, and the Nordes works well. Nordes comes from Galicia, and this drink was invented at a restaurant there, where they call it the “Chupi Tonic.” They make it equal parts tonic and wine, but we skew gin heavy. Before it was available in the US, we’d fill our suitcases with it coming home from Galicia just to make this drink.

Flaviar.com has the 12th and 13th special edition 47 Monkeys in stock.

As a bit of follow up, I made (batched and put in the freezer overnight) some martinis. Served over the weekend.

2oz Nordes Gin
.5oz Dolin Blanc
.5oz Noilly Prat Extra Dry
.75oz water
a few dashes of Miracle Mile orange bitters

I thought it was a good alternative to the traditional martini that I’m used to that features the London Dry profile. Felt a bit lighter (more floral). Next time I try it, I may dial back the water a touch to give the drink more bite.

Was the water to compensate for the water that would have come from the ice or do you do you like it a bit diluted?
