Upon opening, thought I had been transported to a Goodyear Tire factory. So overwhelming!
After a bit of air, developed into a delightful mélange of rubber, mint, and cantaloupe. Delicious, complex, and balanced. Highly recommend, especially if you’ve been put off by the '22’s so far (definitely not my experience).
Will be there in 2 weeks to taste again
And again. Bottle #2 was a bit better than the one I had in October. Interesting to see I noted botrytis on the Nose on bottle #2, but not on #1 — perhaps #2’s “botrytis” was #1’s “baked apple jelly and cinnamon”?
2002 Gunderloch Nackenheim Rothenberg Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Rheinhessen (12/29/2024)
– popped and poured –
– tasted non-blind over 3.75 hrs. –

NOSE: fairly expressive aromatics, with concentrated mandarin leading the way; notes of honey and botrytis spice present, as well.
BODY: medium amber color; full bodied; no spritz.
TASTE: ooooooh! … this is excellent. Surprisingly ample acidity (medium+ to high). In the perfect primary-tertiary spot for my preferences. Incredibly juicy and packed with flavor … this is fan-tass-tic! 8.0% alc. is hidden. Great bottle!
That pretty much describes most recent vintages of Zilliken.
This is everything that I wanted when opening up a Riesling tonight. Incredible stuff. Bottle was gone in under two hours between my wife and I.
Seconded – went through two in a week, wish I got more.
The ‘97s were great.
Had some pretty awesome Zilliken stickies from 2005 and 2010. Outside of those, haven’t been particularly impressed.
My go-to Falkenstein is Munny. I’m glad you liked it.
Yep. Sometime around 2014 they got boring.
I had @Marcus_Goodfellow 's wonderful 2023 Riesling the other night. What a treat! Right up my Strasse - a lean, mean, Riesling-machine! Laser dry and austere, just like I love them. Please don’t miss if you enjoy that style!
Ganevat’d Riesling, 3 year elevage… excellent wine but I’d have a bit of trouble calling it Riesling blind.
Tired of insipid, bland easy drinkers? Try this. High acidity, with a tart bite. Sour apples, salty lemon preserves, followed by more yellow things, sprinkled with herbs and some chalk, all served on stoneware.
We had the 2015 Berg Roseneck from Breuer last night. I really like the style! Great wines. Need to get a few for my cellar.
2017 Hofgut Falkenstein Niedermenniger Herrenberg Riesling Kabinett trocken - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (1/6/2025)
– popped and poured –
– tasted non-blind over a couple hours on Day 1; revisited for an hour on Day 2 –
– AP#: … 1 18 –
NOSE: light/tight; light petrol; rainwater. Gives an overall “fresh” impression.
BODY: light yellow, with a tinge of green; light bodied.
TASTE: markedly dry — salty-dry; high acid; 10.5% alc. not noticeable; surprisingly, has a long finish; lime soda water; extremely tart — I love it, but many will find this too severe; this is the Mutter Anna bottling, before it was labelled as such. DAY 2: fantastic pairing with a lemony shrimp & cannellini beans dish – the high acidity played perfectly with the lemon, in particular. Excellent wine for those who like the dry/high acid style.
Deeply impressed my Martin Müllen Trarbacher Hühnerberg “A&J” Spätlese trocken 2011. An elegant, vivid gem.
Almost mature. Rip snorting acidity but also excellent mid-palate depth so it doesn’t seem severe/austere.
Crusius Spätlese Traiser Bastei 2008 war in the perfect phase now. Not great, but perfectly balanced and elegant.
