Sub 401. It hasnt been the same since Cam left.
Can do all the lots but the post 402 wines won’t do well with the exception of the RC shiners. I kind of think true shiners should be eliminated though, but those were incredible deals.
I think it won’t be very controversial having someone pick 68 wines as the top 10 or 20 are probably pretty universal.
Thinking this out, the tournament is kind of flawed cause wines with massive case numbers are more likely to do well and that’s not really the point.
I had a case of those have drank at least four as cellar defenders but it’s been awhile. Always thought they weren’t quite as good as n.279 but then again 279 had more age on it also. May need to re-visit one again soon if they are coming around
Would be interesting to see if one of the AI tools could put together a good bracket if you tell it to use WB threads, CellarTracker, Denegociants etc as inputs. I tried a quick Grok prompt, came out decently but could definitely refine it to be better:
This looks great, and as good as any other method, if you asked me. I particularly like the brackets of grouped similar wines. I wouldn’t personally have much input to any broad bracket, as I have only tried about 18 or so sub-401 dN wines, and less than 5 that made this particular cut, but I definitely have a few favorites, and a few not.
Great idea and very smart to use AI (grok) !!
I like to hallucinate occasionally. So does Grok?
In example:
- Lot 200 (2019 Pinot Gris, OR) - Oregon standout.
- Lot 250 (Chardonnay, Napa) - Solid white.
Hmmmm.
Popularity vs. Quality: Lot 240’s cult status might outshine Lot 64’s polish—let voters decide!
My vote is definitely for #64 over #240! 64 is awesome
Wow. I never use AI - so don’t really know its applications - but it’s AMAZING the response that you got from it by just asking a question in a normal conversational format. I can see why all the students are using it these days…
240 cult status is because of QPR not absolute quality.
And the fact that it had 9 lives and was sold out like 10 times.
Actually, 240 is back up in the bottle shop now!
You were supposed to wait until April 1 to post that.
Betcha looked!
#240, ha, I Almost looked. But, it’s probably actually all now by gone, I got/drank 6 bottles, that was plenty for me. #230 case remains unopened….
I hope it’s yummy?
Got suckered last year. Never again! 68 is back up, though.
My hat is off to those making it into the WB Sweet Sixteen; as, 15th seeded L 455 Albarino, a combination of highly ranked Chardonnays, 9th seed L 52 Cab Franc, 7th seed L 518 Malbec and 11th seed L 229 Mourvedre/Syrah, but it was inevitable this year that the Elite Eight fell to old purple bloods L 64 Calistoga, new kid on the block L 390 Coombsville, L 300 Howell, L 216 Stags Leap, L 200 Napa, L 251 Sonoma Mountain, L 385 St Helena-Rutherford and how the hell did upset minded L 234 Russian River Pinot Noir blow an 18 pt lead to L 145 Napa Valley (93 to 89)?
Looks like the same old pours will spill into the Final Four again this year. // OK, this was last night’s dream of the up coming WB March Madness dN tournament. By the way, both L 240 Red Mountain and L 68 Sonoma County were upset in the second round.
March(ing) Madness?
Lot 255 2019 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
PnP. #30/36, over 3 years in the bottle.
Initially the nose had a hint of nail polish, which blew off over a short time.
Its a medium+ weight CS, 15% alcohol stated. Easy to drink up this smooth, dark, complex and delicious double Yum!!
I believe you could age this longer, it IS ready for my tastes.
with Prime Tri-Tip
This Celebrates my monthly March up Cerro Alto! Month #90! 110th time in the last 90 months. Phew
The views of Morro Rock are awesome. On clear mornings, I have seen Kaweah Peak Ridge 140 miles to the East in the snow covered Sierra Nevada, so triple wonderful!!!
PNP a lot 530 straight off the FedEx truck.
Light in color, nose was vibrant with a hint of raspberry
Well structured but lacks iany body at this time. Will see what it taste like in 5 years.
#bepatient
I am so fricken envious of those views!
That’s how lot 500 tasted to me about a month after I received it, no body or structure.
OG N.75 2018 Walla Walla Syrah
“My last Syrah?” Final Bottle 12/12, PnP, I pulled it out from the Library. 4+ years in the bottle.
Deep, dark & delicious. It’s big @ 15.8%, but very nicely balanced for such a big Syrah.
This can still be aged longer, if you desire? I really enjoyed this 1++ ++ fine red wine!
with Spaghetti and Meatballs
Day 2 - oxidized, pruning and deteriorating….
N. 50 Walla Walla Cab Sav 2018. Really enjoyed this. Best bottle yet. 92pts. Nice to rotate in a different CS profile. 1 hour decant. Either I was thirsty or this went down really well.
