$2019 Pagodes de Cos. $36 buy at Costco so wanted to see what this was about. Cranberry, slightly plummy, sandalwood aromas. Definitely a baby with a lot of wood on the palate and little fruit. Some earthy minerality with good acidity and mellow tannins. Fruit needs to flesh out more with time but for $36 was a good not great Bordeaux second wine.
Two “reasonable” white Burgundies this weekend. 'cept they weren’t being reasonable as they were both Pre-mox. Knew it from the color the minute each hit the glass. Oh well. At least it aint Leflaive.
$40 in Nor. Cal. Bought a couple, but now having regrets. 2015 was a bit meh. Expected it to be better.
I guess not bad for a Monday.
2015 Domaine Rousset Crozes-Hermitage Les Picaudières. Killer vineyard with vines dating back to 1930, but the overly-solar vintage dominates.
2020 Hofgut Falkenstein Krettnacher Euchariusberg Riesling Kabinett. Not really showing me the beauty that some other vintages have shown. Perhaps too young, don’t know.
I went with 2020 Briords with fish, but a Falkenstein Rosé was calling my name too.
What a pleasant time to drink this wine. It’s right in the sweet spot of evolution for me. On the nose, it’s mostly tertiary with dead leaves and fresh blackcurrant leaves but as it gets some air the blackcurrant fruit is also coming out. On the palate this is still very lively with plenty of fruit, nice acidity and fine tanins that still grip. Not huge, but rather medium bodied and calling for food. Lovely time with this bottle.
I just drank a 1983 Meyney that on day 2 was actually very much alive and kicking.
I have learned to look at things, wine and otherwise, that a true “wow” experience is a gift. It really cannot be planned or predicted, although some of us certainly try to do that. We look for the potential “wow”, plot a course for it, and set sail. Often though, we find it unexpectedly.
Tonight I was gifted a “wow” pairing of a Chianti with pizza. Enjoyable at first without food, with a restrained brightness, then with the pizza (slices of pepperoni, cheese, and garlic) the wine went “Mama Mia!”. Tasty and complex fruit, herbs, and earth. Memory is not my strong point, but I will call this my best wine and pizza pairing ever. Wow!
Rocca delle Macie Chianti Classico Riserva 2018
I’m really starting the 2018’s I’ve tried. The Basilica Cafaggio CCR is a go to for me. Nothing over the top, but everything perfectly in place.
Was about to head over to local wine bar and took a look at the rain and high winds outside. Opened a 2017 Bedrock Sky Vineyard Syrah instead
Had 2013 Meyney the other night, had a nice tomato leaf note to go with the fruit. Found a case I didn’t know I had, time to drink up.
Threw a load of sediment too.
This wine was a steal at Costco for $16.99 or some such.
Not sure what happened but it’s gone. Better than expected. Much better
This was a fun one at work tonight, I just remember thinking I want this on pancakes. Maple syrup nose with some pretty decent acid.
2000 Ch. Quinault l’Enclos, Saint-Emilion
Best and last bottle from a 6-pack at release purchase. Classic Bordeaux bouquet. Plump ripe fruit with appropriate leather, tobacco notes. A-
more for you
That’s 2010 Jamet CR is something special. Can’t imagine how much better that Cote Brune is, cool you got to try!
