2020 La Porte St Jean Les Pouches. Glorious Loire cab franc with soaring aromatics of tobacco, green pepper, horse shit, and blackberry. On the palate a beam of acid, somewhat rustic though moderate tannins, medium body, and a medium + finish. Excellent stuff.
I’ve loved the few that I have tried. How is their premix record?
Not great. I tend to drink these younger, even though I’m confident they will age, barring pre-mox. But unfortunately I’ve had some pre-mox (though not yet with '17s or anything) and I’ve read a lot of bad reports. Unfortunately, they have not gone DIAM.
Still, I’m a buyer. I think they may well be making the best value White Burgs, period. I prefer them to many, many big-name more-expensive producers.
Visited here years ago. Really nice folk.
Dang, I’m always on the lookout. I’ve really been digging Latour-Giraud lately as a value play for Meursault (Unfortunately they do not use DIAM either). I poured these blind for a large group 2 weeks ago and the Latour-Giraud was the unanimous winner.
Notes:
The Latour Giraud was incredible. Toasty brioche and mineral reduction. Tightly wound at first, but unfolded beautifully with layers and layers of citrus fruit, limestone and rain water. Grand Cru depth, intensity and finish. Stunning performance that reminds me of 2007 - 2014 era Roulot. Several people in the group thought this was a Grand Cru.
The Lafon seemed like it was really going to take off with a beautiful nose and hints of electric potential on opening, but it proceeded to do the opposite and shut down hard in the decanter. Everything about this wine just seemed a little muted and although delicious it was not the electric powerhouse that Lafon Charmes often is. You could sense the latent power below the surface, but this needs time.
Great to know! At some point (hopefully soon) I am going to have to make it over to France and visit some wineries - added Bagnol to the list
Well worth adding! You can take a short train from Marseille and get off at the Cassis station. The winery is on the walk into town.
Fantastic dinner at Svinkløv Badehotel (seaside hotel?) - food was amazing, especially fish and beef. The wine list is second level - as rare wines are at super fair price levels ![]()
Ulysse Collin P was firing from first pour - mouthwatering complexity, very much for reflection
Lamy-Caillat C 2021 - was simply beautiful, but needed some time to open. Should decant next time, but this was so elegant and at the same time intense.
Mugnier Fuees 2022 was simply crazy, goosebumps and watering eyes from the sheer beauty of the nose - also delivered in the mouth, so smooth and velvet.
Koji B 2022 - also crazy good as usual. Not the level of Mugnier, but the sheer complexity delivered by a Bourgogne is amazing.
Just love the elegance of Le Chiuse!
Ok, who are you and what are have you done with my cellar? Next thing I suppose you’re going to pour Dauvissat and Fourrier? ![]()
Big fan of Latour Giraud’s Genevrieres! Great stuff
We definitely seam to be in lock-step on more than a few producers. We should probably drink together at some point! ![]()
2014 Mending Wall Petite Sirah Palisades Vineyard
Decanted 1/2 and saved the other in the fridge in a 375ml. Lots of sediment.
It was great young, is still big and black and will stain anything, more rounded out and less tannic than I last remember. Great fruit and complexity. I’m sure this will be fine in 20 years a but at 10y/o it’s just fine and enjoyable as I remember. The PS became my favorite offering from MW after buying their first vintage cab. Glad I eventually switched to their PS and have some bottles left.
Mushroom-y, earth, smoked meat, dried cherries, and figs. Integrated tannins with nice acidity. Long, umami finish. 14.5% abv.
