Opened one for science. Probably 10 years too young. But damn good.
How was the Dancer? Curious - I have a couple of that one in 19.
2022 Berthaut-Gerbet Gevrey Chambertin Combe de Dessus
Only open for a couple hours now. Fresh raspberries, blackberry, dusty wild blueberries, red/purple florals, white pepper, and a little rich meatiness on the nose. A touch glossy on the palate, glides easily to the back of the throat but with good structure from powdery tannins and juicy acidity. There is a sense of elegance to this wine despite its concentration of dried blackberry, plum, and savory tones of white pepper, crushed stones, and baking spices in the finish. With air the black fruit intensifies on the palate but isn’t overly ripe or opulent. Maybe starting to shut down a little, but very pleasant.
Great BBQ, great friends, good young wines. The Folliard has always been a wow wine but have to say the Cruzelles was the winner tonight.
• 2017 Schrader RBS Beckstoffer To Kalon Cab Sauv.
I was fearing a hot, hollow mess. Far from it. I don’t always appreciate TRB styled wines but he rose to the occasion for this difficult vintage; maybe the challenges truncated his tendency toward opulence.
From CT review:
Just 1 hr decant, approached with trepidation given some of the other comments. Well, I can definitely understand what some other reviewers say about weakness in the mid-palate, but honestly, to my uncouth taste buds, it did not taste hollowed out. I have to call this a success given the challenges of the vintage: Not nearly as hot as I had feared ; no sign of smoke taint. I don’t always care for the TRB style but this really showcased his talent. A very pleasant and seamless fruit profile up front: plum, raspberry, maraschino. The vegetal note is not a nasty greenness but a nice contour. Interesting spice box: clove, cumin, allspice. It’s not the best Schrader you’ll ever have but it has its own distinct charms that distinguish it from technically superior wines.
Score: 93. Relative to expectations: +
What a fabulous wine. Reaching full maturity at 20 years. Epitome of Cote Rotie. Not a hint a brett. Dark plum fruits, tapenade, herbs. Balanced long and intense. When Jamet reaches maturity it is a whole new level for me.
Hotel mini-bar casualty.
2019 Ferrari-Carano Sonoma Chardonnay in 375ml. All that was available in hotel room in Nashville. For my taste - a terrible wine. Blustery and blousy, with no subtlety whatsoever, just tons of oak and alcohol that dominates (14.4% alc). I’d give it 79pts on a good day.
But I know this wine sells like crazy and is very popular. So popular in fact, that Foley Family Wines bought the whole estate last year for undisclosed sum.
Drank like a Peter Michael . Enjoyed last night with my friend who’s been on the Peter Michael list for 30+ years. He had never had it before. When I told him Vanessa Wong made the wine he said maybe we should place an order. Time to reach out I haven’t bought from them in a few years and like them and their wines
Steak night and my partner asked for something spicy. The Migoua is more leathery than spicy but was truly exceptional and has me wondering why I don’t have more of these wines in my collection.
Well made pinot, if you have 19, i would open it a bit in advance.
Yearly barbecue wirh swim squad.
All wines were spot on, Granit by vaccelli, slow-oxed for 12 hours, red fruit jumping out of the glass, a sciarccelu all about infusion. Clément Minard on fire
2015 Maison d’Amis Cab. In a very nice spot. Drinking beautifully. Made by Steve Matthiasson. Throwback style of Napa Cab. Nice nose of flowers and dark cherry. Dark fruits, sage, tea. Soft tannins. Nice to sip and will be wonderful with the filets I’m about to fire up. As a bonus, we are drinking it out of the Glasvins my wife got for me for Father’s Day.
2024 Domaine du Bagnol Rose
Tasty, quaffable rose to start, and get in a more summery mood than NYC gave us today.
2023 Sabelli-Frisch Biograf “The Bench” Syrah
3/4 bottles of what has become one of my favorite Syrahs to pair with the meat. Delicious as ever, although had the slightest touch of Brett/VA that dissipated after a ~60 min decant.
Chardonnay and mahjong. Manliest (and best) Father’s Day ever.
Good grief is this 17 Germain Perrieres amazing. I love Germain and this is a step up from the rest of the superb lineup. Crazy fragrant. Big white and yellow fruits. Intense minerality. Classy and weighty and grand cru quality.
