What bottle of wine did you open today? (Part 2)

That 1996 is one of my favorite vintages of this wine. It’s outstanding.

So damn good, even in quite ripe vintages. Blood orange citrus acids lifting the iron-inflected darker fruits. Lots of earthy minerality in this wine, a grainy chalky presence coats the palate.

Rivers-Marie 2023 Sonoma Coast Pinot. Young, but very tasty. Hard to keep them in the wine cellar for long.

2013 Bernard Moreau Volnay Caillerets

Delicious red fruited open

2010 Burlotto Barolo - decanted for 4 hours, really helped the wine. Very youthful but has typical sweet cherry, rose, anise, some tar and leather. Very nice, just make sure to decant.

2011 Chapoutier Hermitage blanc Chante-Alouette alongside roasted veal tenderloin with creamed leeks and fennel. My fourth bottle of this but it’s been several years at least and it’s quite good, not profound, but it’s been a very good one. My remaining stash may make it to their 20th year in good form.

Still hard as nails?

Aubert was quite good showing roasted peach notes with Halibut at a little restaurant called Grove Market in Bishopville MD. Terrible wine glasses though. Also had a nice Huet earlier in the week

Had to pop one of these again from Andremily. An electric Albariño

A truly elegant rosé from Thomas Perseval — vinous, well-structured, and beautifully balanced. A wine that speaks with quiet confidence.

The Jules Brochet 2019 – Coteaux “Le Nord du Mont Ferré” delivered a stunning surprise. Blind, it could easily be mistaken for a fine Meursault — the same creamy texture, precise oak integration, and layers of ripe stone fruit and brioche. There’s a subtle tension and depth that lingers on the palate, with floral notes (honeysuckle, acacia) adding lift. The soul of a white Burgundy — truly captivating.

Can you taste the albarino in this? For me, their Syrahs hide the grape, but the Mourvèdre is put on a throne. Haven’t had anything white from them.

I would be the wrong person to ask about Albarino flavor profile. The wine is large. I like all of Jim’s wines but prefer the reds to this. His white cuvee is also very nice.

A decent well balanced and affordable Bourgogne rouge (31€).

1983 Brane Cantenac. Holy cow. Firmly in the “why didn’t I buy more of these” category. Just gorgeous. Pure, vivid and fully resolved. In a great place.

83s are so underrated and so good and in such a good place. I’m biased as it’s my birthyear, but still….

Yup. Love this vintage.

2023 Arnot-Roberts Ascona Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc

Drinking nicely now but I’m going to give my other bottles another year or two.

Outstanding alongside grilled lamb chops. Opened the bottle an hour before a splashy pour. I’d venture to say this is at its peak, as I can’t imagine it getting any better with more aging
