Over-priced (and hyped?) Pinot Blanc for the win? (loss?) I dunno. I get this is one is a weaker link in the lineup but Wasenhaus across the range so far has left me flat more often than not. Oh well.
I mean if that’s all you got …
Goodfellow Richard’s Cuvée Whistling Ridge Chardonnay 2021
Krug Grand Cuvée 172eme
Chateau Lynch Bages 1995
Some good juice this weekend. All showed very well, but by the end of the night the one I kept reaching back for was the Goodfellow.
2013 Royal Tokay Red Label 5 Puttonyos
Jacqueline made a cherry clafoutis today, guided by a Julia Child recipe. I went down the stairs to the wine cellar, selected this bottle of wine, came back up the stairs, put it in the refrigerator, and after a light dinner, I opened and poured the wine and served us each a small glass with a piece of the clafoutis at room temperature. Hey, we each contributed. Partner teamwork in action!
The wine was superb alone, and better with the clafoutis. I put the bottle back in the fridge under a Repour stopper. We will explore some variations of this pairing over the next few dinners. (warming the clafoutis; serving it with goat cheese, possibly with honey; etc.). Decadence in moderation.
Any thoughts? Ready to go?
2015 Altesino Montosoli with a nice Italian dinner after my daughter’s graduation. Didn’t take a picture because the label was so mangled. Drank beautifully after 30 minutes of air and surprisingly ready to go.
Notes on the 172, please!!!
Those look awesome! Especially for a lunch. Had the 09 Clos de Papes last week and found it kind of flat. Maybe past its prime? What was your thoughts? Thanks!
Had this yesterday at winery. They are vey proud of it. Having been making for a long time and atypical for the region.
Our bottle had been in temp controlled storage since release and was fresh as a daisy and was bright and not at all heavy. It was very good
Bought mine from auction. Had bought a few, so will see. Glad you’re experience was pleasant!
Pagani stole the show with Murray Grey Tri-tip.
Savory, bramble, black fruits, acid, all in wonderful balance right now.
RM always good, just overshadowed tonight despite a 2hr decant.
That 18 pagani is lights out. Alas - down to my last bottle.
Picked up a couple bottles as part of a mixed lot. Hugely expressive nose, excellent balance of fruit and tannins. Blind I would guess Bordeaux. Great bottle.
This is my second bottle that I’ve had of this vintage. This is drinking fantastic right now. I decanted for three hours and it was ready to go! Beautiful nose of strawberries leather, and balsamic. The palate was more tart cherry and white pepper. Acid and tannins were in balance and the bottle was empty way too fast. I have two more bottles in the cellar that I will hold off on.
Random local wine store find.
Rene Bouvier - Marsannay, Le Clos 2016
While on day 1 it was very uptight and not really open, it’s somewhat unfolded here with the final glass three days later. Lovely nose of acacia, elderflower and a bit of mint. The mouth is long and persistent with peach, pear and a slight minerally saltiness to it. Surprising.
Even as a Wasenhaus fanboy, I agree that there a better wines and better value to be found in Germany when it comes to white none-riesling varieties.
Unsurprisingly I don’t agree on the reds, but that is all about preferences (and maybe EU prices for me as well). The reds do however have periods of shutting down pretty hard. Just had a 2018 Kanzel that might have been one of the most closed down wines I’ve ever tasted.
They polarize. And the hype is over, the wines don‘t sell out as they used to.
i think this is just a common symptom for any social media influenced producer du jour. prices (and availability) for wines like les horees (and others) are also entering mean reversion.
- 2017 Henri Boillot Meursault - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault (8/6/2025)
Obvious oak use on the nose that was bordering on over-the-top for me, curiously it also had the Ramonet spearmint note. Palate was better to me, some green fruit and a serious weight for its level that represented Meursault well. Serious acidity that balanced the ripe fruit; would suggest drinking this up now as it became more honeyed with air. (92 pts.)
