Notes to follow. The Chablis rocked.
We cancelled a getaway to Portland, Maine to celebrate Jacqueline’s birthday because of rainout, so I became shopper, chef and sommelier for a modest dinner celebration at home. A couple of glasses of Roederer Collecton 244 pre-dinner. This had the stuff to accompany our halibut in lemon butter sauce to bottle’s end, so the waiting Sancerre continued waiting in the fridge. A selection of tartlets from Whole Food’s with a 2013 Fesls Aunis Coteaux du Layon was a good ending to a nice evening and meal.
P.S. The Collection 244 is a delight, not a wine to be nitpicked, but simply enjoyed.
2015 Ridge Geyserville. Starting to turn the corner toward a more restrained/clarety persona though there is still some nice berry fruit. Balanced and delicious with lots of savory interest including earth and tobacco to accompany the warm vintage fruit.
Prepared in the venerable Spanish tradition, the delicious Callos dish made by dear sis-in-law @ibarramia, and served with dinner at home, paired so well with the classical 1987 Bodegas Riojanas Monte Real Gran Reserva, among other wines that were poured. The complexity of the 38 year-old Monte Real exuded smooth elegance, deft fruit layers with some acidity, leather, and a nice touch of savory note.
Vilmart Grand Cellier d’Or 2017
80% Chard, 20% PN, Disgorged April 2021. Not sure what the dosage is on this (7g/l?).
Good nose on this of dried apricots, ripe citrus and honey on toast. The palate displays a tad of sweetness that I find out of place. It’s got the good Vilmart acidity but the perceptible sweetness is a little cloying. Good chalky finish. Maybe time in bottle will help.
Dampt Chablis 1er Cru Vaucoupin 2014
Perfect stage in its evolution. Golden colored with slight green hue. Citrus, iodine, cardamom and a little bit of quince jelly. Great palate presence on ripe fruits amd the citrusy acidity carries the mid-palate to a nice saline finish. Drink up.
Antoine Chevalier Carkonnia 2017
Very nice champagne. My last of 4 and they were all enjoyable. 100% Chard, Disgorged on April 2021, 2g/l and just over 2500 bottles made. Roasted nuts, toasted bread, apple and pear. Harmonious on the palate with a long finish.
Happy birthday Jacqueline! ![]()
Huet Clos du Bourg Sec 2010
Bright golden, a nose that oozes citrus, mint, minerals and a hint of blackcurrant. Fresh and tart with superb length. Tastes of baked lemons with a touch of crushed sugar and a light and balancing bitterness, flint, as well as hints of blackcurrant leaves.
Fabulous balance and sweet fruit that unfolds over the citrusy and mineral acidity, pure and very intense with superb length. Great wine, in good vintages Huet produces some of the least expensive world-class wines you can buy.
• 2013 Lucien Le Moine Griotte-Chambertin
This was certainly fine, but fell short of great. LLM managed to make a pretty good 2013 though.
From CT review:
Sour cherries, loam, spice. Well balanced in terms of acidity and tannins. Heavier than I expected, and I’d have to call it a success in terms of the vintage. I’ve been spoiled recently with outstanding burg producers in better years and this, though fine, can’t really compete with them. This lacks the exhilarating complexity of the great GCc in great years.
Still life with 09’ Fourrier Gevrey 1er Moines, wild morels, crispy duck and a friend in northern Maine. There might have been a black fly, possibly even two.
Rain today. Grilled picanha and elk tonight with bubbles, Bordeaux and cribbage.
And trash talk.
Pierre is off to good start with it’s 1st release and cathiard is just sensational 21 easy ti drink pinot.
Ribeye sandwiches on brioche with garlic aioli and provolone, arugula salad. And a few decent bottles.
2020 Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion Le C des Carmes Haut-Brion
Solid quaffer and value. Mixed, freshly-picked red and dark berries, herbs, smoke and salinity. Hints of pyrazine. A refreshing drink. Medium bodied, early maturing. (90-91 pts.)
If i knew galeyrand 19 would turn out to be that good, i would stocked up much more than what i already bought.
A hedonistic Pure pinot with a geniune core fruit that is just mind blowing . Vin d’émotion !
