Bruno Paillard Cuvée 72
After another lovely day in the Dolomites. I always enjoy this cuvée. It’s like my white bread grilled cheese with coleslaw and pickles, I know i shouldn’t like it that much, but I do.

We didn’t have much left for aperitivo so we had it with speck and crickets :

Maybe I need to do screening Covid tests more often before I go to work.

Probably better to do them when you get home!

Cross post, opened 2019 Chateau Tronquoy today.

Decanted for 2 hours before first taste in a Spiegelau Definition Universal glass. BBQ smoke, black licorice, and purple florals giving way to lush black currant, blackberry, blueberry, and vanilla on the nose. Fresh, yet robust and expansive on the palate with some richness in black fruit over an undercurrent of leather, cigar box, and oak over a long finish. After another couple hours there is more spice and lightly roasted chestnut flavors on the palate as the leather note softens. The finely gripping tannins and fresh acidity frame this wine nicely, and the alcohol is perfectly integrated/imperceptible. Very nice wine with a lot of runway, and a great QPR. Might need to check out the 2016 now.

Cracked a 2009 Deux Vert Syrah from @Todd_Hamina aka Biggio Hamina tonight. Cork was a little soft but came out intact.

Visited Todd a few years back. He left quite the impression on my wife when he asked her what she would pair with a hot dog. Well, tonight we are drinking this with Wagyu hot dogs we received in a recent beef box.

Wine is dark, brooding a touch funky. Very savory, mushrooms. Dead ringer for Northern Rhône. Will be fun to follow over the evening.

2015 Dame de Montrose. Silly how good this is already. Widely available for ~$50-60/btl and a bargain at the price

Neil, I had the 2019 at a restaurant with my son two weeks ago, it was the only thing I could afford at that Michelinesque place, lol. Actually, it was only thing on the list that was fairly priced. A youngster but loved it enough to wanna go grab a six pack. Had a 2010 recent that was major yum.

Relevant to your interests, the ‘14 was good a few weeks back. Still quite youthful with room to grow.

2007 Johan Vineyard Estate PN

Nose has plum, sour cherry, pepper, violets and limestone. Light cherry, apple, and plum in the mouth. Light tannins across mid palate. Mild notes of mushroom add to the fruit on the back of the tongue. Quick finish. Past its prime by a year or two, but still pleasant when given a few hours to open. 3.5/5. (2.5 = meh)

Bruno Lorenzon Montagny 1er Cru Le Choix du Roi 2020
Now we’re talking, this showed much better integration than my previous bottle in early fall. So much dry extract. Powdered lemon drops, good acid framing, long, dry saline finish. Texture is chewy and delicious.

Spelling correction/reference to Roebert in 3, 2, 1…

My work is done here…

It’s soooo overrated!

We just got to Venice.

Good restaurant recommended by a friend. I ordered a Cerasuolo. Sold out. Pio Cesare Barolo, sold out. Something or another Rosso di Montalcino, sold out ! They brought this out and told me they’d discount by 30%. Let’s try it

Red and black berries, plenty of acidity, somewhat coarse tannins but lacking complexity. Decent.

The calamari was really, really good. Like, Tokyo or Singapore good. The kids were served quickly. The service was impeccable. I’m happy.

But before the restaurant we had this:

This wine is more stone than fruit. All kinds of mineral and salinity with just enough citrus. Striking and fresh. Easy to drink.

Caveat: we sell this.

Two stonkingly good mature Hunter Semillons.
The 1993 Stephens was a revelation at 32 years old. Mid yellow, toasty lemony goodness bright acidity and a long finish
The 2002 Vat 1 was a bit darker yellow a bit softer and rounder but still a very fine and lovely wine. The last vintage before they switched to screw cap

Tyrrells had a very bad run with TCA infected corks in 2001 and 2002. They took the cork manufacturers to court for damages and won. The also gave up on cork completely at the same time.
