Burgundy get-away line-ups continued…
Happy friday
Lovely mature Nardi Brunello from 1988 - still very strong flavors, and best with some air. Aged leather, dried cherries, and earthy truffle. Lovely resolved, rich fruit and tobacco. Lovely with beef the finish is long and complex, well-integrated tannins and a touch of savory spice.
Day 2 on this as we had but one glass in the restaurant. Same thing: toasted wood, borderline burned rubber and toasted sesame. Almost undrinkable.
Someone named Peguinoid had this and posted on CT with a much different experience. He didn’t note any empyreumatic aromas or flavors. I’d love to have another opinion as my wife and I agree this is a total wreck…
Edit: Penguinoid seemed to have the regular bottling not the “85” cuvée. That could be why he actually enjoyed the other wine.
That picture of the marbled beef and Brunello activated my salivary glands instantly. Beautiful.
My local wine shop actually has some of the Mortet. I know little about the producer. Is this a pretty solid buy across vintages? I believe they have the 2022.
My salivary glands activated just by reading this sentence. Gonna have to look upthread and see what all the fuss is about.
2005 JK Carriere Anderson Family Vineyard Pinot Noir
Edited to tone the beat down a tad:
Deep crimson with evident bricking. Ripe black fruit on the nose, along with a hint of steamed fruit and black pepper. I tasted mushroom, dried fig. A mid palate acid gradient but mostly integrated, no longer the jagged tannin and acid of its preteens. A pleasant rosewater aftertaste. The slightest hint of stewed veg did carry to the mouth. This is a wine that likely came to its full expression less than a handful of years ago. Still an enjoyable, decent drink a full twenty years after its vintage.
Very light and drinking beautifully after a short 30 min decant. Absolutely no sign of smoke taint and definitely going to seek out more bottles!!
Yeah, I’m a big fan. I think Arnaud Mortet is one of the best young modern wine makers in Gevrey. The wines are super stylish and elegant. They drink really well young and then shut down for a bit before they open up beautifully. The Mes Cinq Terroirs is one of the best village wines in Burgundy and the Lavaux St Jacques is also pretty stunning. I personally don’t have any experience with any of the Grand Crus though.
Thank you! I’ll have to check some out. I’m pretty sure it’s the Mes Cinq Terriors. Saw it the other day. Really appreciate the input.
Kellerei Bozen Taber Lagrein Riserva 2021
The kids had a burger and frittura mista di pesce. My wife had the Entrecôte and I had the braised beef cheek. It paired best with my dish.
Typical Syrah color. Ripe cherry with some red florals. Lagrein polished smoothness for the tannins with medium acidity. Decent +.
2003 Vieux Telegraphe La Crau
First time with this. Didn’t get many ‘03s. They handled the heat well imho. Very pleasant.
The grand crus are good, if pricey. I think trapet is better though and less expensive
For the grand crus or in general?
Both. I think trapet is making some of the very best if not the best wine in Gevrey though. I would also buy Bruno Clair over mortet.
Paired well with ricotta gnocchi and marinara. Crunchy raspberry, zippy acidity, simple pleasure.
This saved the night after a TCA fail from a 2010 Produttori barbaresco.
Congrats on the medical news!
Big fan of La Spinetta
