The 05’ we tried from a 750cc was delicious in April. Much more open for business than the mag from Friday.
Feels and tastes tertiary, yet there appears to be some fruit still hiding on the finish the longer this sits in the glass. My wife is not a fan. Paired with Flannery hangers for lunch. 3+ hour decant.
I did not manage to take any photos of last night, but had an amazing afternoon of walking the vineyards at MacDonald with Alex while drinking some Billecart-Salmon brut rose that my buddy brought, and then trying the MacDonald ‘21 vintage (we loved it).
Then went to Bottega and brought with us to enjoy:
-Frank Cornelissen, Munjebel
-'17 Pierre Gonon Saint Joseph
and '02 Emidio Pepe Montepulciano (followed by too many Averna Amaros)
WOTN were the MacD and the Pepe
Too much fun was had to take notes.
2019 Once and Future Tedeschi Vineyard Zinfandel
What a great summer Zin! 1&F has never disappointed.
From CT review:
Tons of ripe black cherry/plum, toast, caramel. I got the sense that this will never have a closed phase but would improve for a few years. Went gangbusters with burgers. Disappeared quickly.
More interesting than enjoyable. Quite tart and tannic. I would not try this wine for 7-10+ years. Ultimately a disappointment for the experience that I sought. My first two choices off this otherwise pretty cool list at L’Express in Montreal were sold out.
PS. This wine has a 94.3 CT average, wow. While I cannot discount that perhaps this wine hits higher notes, these CT notes are so way off what I experienced.
Sometimes i worry CT is getting Vivino’fied —
Geez, I hope it wasn’t just the three of you……
By chance, I was also in Montreal yesterday, though I was waiting in a two hour line at the airport to drop checked bags, as their US-bound luggage system was down. Fortunately they delayed the flights enough to get folks on, though one of our bags apparently stayed in Montreal.
We spent a week with my brother’s family down at a pretty quiet place by a little lake close to the VT and NY border, St. Bernard de Lacolle. We had some good wine including a fair amount of late 80s Bordeaux. I did some road/gravel riding on my brother’s bike and a bit of kayaking around the pond.
My experience with Trevallon is generally the older the better. A lot of them are pretty tannic young. The 80s and 90s wines are still excellent.
Bringing things down a notch after the previous night’s Coche. I have been drinking this wine since release, this was my 14th bottle and it is an easy drinking, seamless, pop n pour from a great vintage. An excellent value grand cru, which is not a phrase often used to describe red Burgundy these days.
Two unusual bottles, two disappointing wines.
Le Puy Rose with an unusual ketchupy note. Improving with air. A strong candidate for the heaviest wine bottle ever.
Unterlind Apotheke Kabinett 2022 with a greenish note which throws me off quite a few MSR Rieslings. Canned vegetable soup? Not mine. And how are you supposed to store those?
Both with wax capsules. Ugh.
I’ve had some great bottles of this, and some flawed. A good bottle won’t have that tomato soup/ketchup note. I posted a note on an identically flawed bottle of the 2018 version a couple of years ago. Some thought it was cooked, but @Otto_Forsberg suggested 2-isobutylthiazole as the culprit, and I agree. It can lead to just that type of flaw. They use no sulfur at bottling, leaving their wines at risk for all sorts of microbiological misadventures. Despite having had some phenomenally good bottles, I’m no longer a buyer.
Sounds like an off bottle. I had a 2005 recently and it was still young with only a hint of development.
Robert I hope you are going to drop a detailed post on your visit in the travel forum. Taking notes
I have a few more. I may open one to see sooner than later. It did soften over the course of the day but still fairly tertiary.
2021 Gerard Bertrand Orange Gold
Disappointing first taste. Tried to keep my palate and mind open as I sipped at it through a light dinner of middle east meets tex-mex. Herbal and savory, hard to find any fruit, overall impression between off-putting and interesting, but ultimately just ‘meh’ for me this evening. My wife’s mind closed after her first taste, and she did not finish her glass. Still have a few glasses in the bottle for revisiting over the next couple of days.
Day 2 revisit
Still a wine that is well outside the taste spectrum of other wines for me, but tonight I found it enjoyably interesting. I sipped at it by itself before dinner and then with our meal of basil pesto with sun gold cherry tomatoes over pasta. I found the wine herbal, with pitted fruit, and with a pleasant lingering tannic aftertaste.
I’m like the Mr. Magoo of travel. I’m always booking everything last minute, a creature of my work schedule. I’m generally a terrible planner. And shit always seems to go wrong, laughably so. I will say, however, somehow I always seem to back into some pretty cool things, but generally not by design. My wife and I are sitting here on a rainy Monday in Montreal and literally every fine dining establishment that I want to eat at is closed on Monday, lol. Looks like we will end up at some tourist joint. At least last night we went to a neighborhood brie that was really quite good, I picked it up from a recommendation here. Not great on ambience, pretty crappy wine, service, and glasses, but the food was very authentic. L’Express. A very convivial, loud, closely packed place, and ironically, an older couple from our hotel that we bumped into in the lobby, ended up seated right next to us. What are the odds of that? A totally lovely couple. Turns out she went to my law school, just a handful of years before me.
Come on, dude. Hotel, restaurant, activities . . . post the full Monty. Dictate your travelogue to an associate and have a memo written. The world awaits
Ok ok, I’ll post a few!!!
