This might be too late but Gibby’s on Youville Sq in Old Mtl should be open. Not the best steakhouse but not bad and the three guys who founded it basically saved that whole area from demolition back in the 1970s.
Shay in Griffintown is probably open — Lebanese, fun, noisy as I remember it. Can’t remember the wine lists of either, probably acceptable but not amazing.
Bright and youthful pale yellow caused excitement after some recent premoxed 2014s.
Like drinking lemons and crushed rocks. Chewy, dense, tactile, minerally and citrusy. This is drinking superbly right now and I am grateful to cork gods for this one being in good shape. One left.
We had check out Gibby’s, looked popular and swank. And then I gasped when I saw the wine list, like what you would find atMortons in Dallas! Caymus, Berlinger, Prisoner, et al.
Yeah that’s a little worse than I recall. However it was at least open on Sunday and you can’t beat the ambiance. Maybe not worth Caymus. What am I saying? Nothing is worth that
My tasting group met tonight, and the host blind tasted us on these Australian wines. Incredibly interesting tasting. Only a couple I wasn’t fond of. Would happily do this lineup again!
With the Wendouree, the Lakes Folly, the Sami Odi and the Yarra Yering No.1 you have some of Australia’s best and most iconic red wine there. Well done
Clusel-Roch La Viallière 2014
Great nose: red berries, violets and lilacs, sweet spices and red meat. This is lively, lots of red berries, great syrah meatiness, salivating acidity amd some grippiness on the tannins. Wonderful to drink now but still some upside. Love this.
Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie 2018
Super expressive black and blue fruit. The nose also displays smoke, black olives, and dried herbs. It feels tightly coiled and rather stern but with plenty of dark fruits to provide some pleasure right away. The florals are lost in the fold and the tanins are still present but the gobs of fruit and fresh acidity make this approachable now. Hold and enjoy, great wine.
Gorgeous. My third bottle this year. This is a wine that I wished I had purchased in multiple case lots. It’s just flat out gorgeous. As polished and sophisticated and complex as a Beaujolais gets.
I know that you are meant to drink Finos fresh and young but found this 2018 bottling at the back of the frig. Delicious, some oiliness and additional nuttiness but still like fresh sea spray. Saliva inducing. Actually don’t mind it with a bit of age.
Light lemon and a hint of mineral and coconut. Easy to go for that third glass…
Blind, I’m not sure I would’ve called this Chablis though: more like a lighter-bodied but still tasty white Burg from Beaune.
