6 hr decant / 6 hr photo setup. Well played, sir.
I’m in love with that wine.
Last night with the Minister of social engagement. Burg for me, Oregon Pinot for her and chocolate for both.
We ordered this with our dinner last night. Someone here on WB had suggested this bottle when I asked for recommendations from this wine list Wine | Cru Uncorked a few months ago. I’m honestly not sure that I’ve ever had a young beaujolais.
It was really delicious and now I need some 2021’s to hang on to.
I was surprised how much of a rustic, barnyard quality this wine had when first opened. After about a 1/2 hr the fruit became much more dominant. A really beautiful wine. So curious how this changes over the years.
Is this your first Foillard? A wonderful producer.
Took a 2016 Scarlett cab to dinner with my wife last night. It opened up nicely over about 45 minutes and was a great pairing with pecan crusted pork chop with a cherry demi-glace. For my palate, it’s at peak.
Yes! Loved it. Definitely need to pick up and age a few bottles.
I try to buy mags most years to cellar as they are usually under $100 at release and provide a ton of joy and discussion when opened for a group.
How long do you like to cellar them?
8 to 10 years, but they could go longer easily. Problem is once you open one with a decade on it, it goes in your friends dinner rotation regularly since it drinks at 5x its price so you have zero guilt and it is so flexible with food.
We munched on the dick taylor belize now munching on goodnow farms peru or nicaragua
If u are into bean to bar dark chocolate go look at the International chocolate awards site lots of good leads
Fingerscrossed Grenache 2021 opened and decanted for a meeting tonight
Two of our favorites
2021 Kobayashi Marsanne-Roussane. No tasting notes. It’s just - special. It warranted foregoing notes and picking out flavors. Just enjoyed it.
2014 Trimbach Pinot Gris Reserve. At $14 from Last Bottle, this is way up there in my all-time QPR list. Mature orchard fruit and nimble acid on day 1; on day 2 the wine filled out a bit more and there was a pleasant bitter note on the finish (admittedly at the expense of a touch of acid). Really lovely.
My first attempt at haute photography. How’d I do, @Warren_Taranow ?
A little Napa wine night to celebrate my getting a new job. Made t-bones and opened a 2010 Blankiet Paradise Hill and 1989 Montelena. 1989 needed 6 hours of decanting but it was singing.
Notes from last night:
2016 Kongsgaard The Judge Chardonnay - My first time tasting this elixir. The nose was somewhat reticent with a hint of lemon. On the palate, there are layers of rich, honeyed fruits, mouth-watering acidity with nice minerality. It’s a mouthful of wine, early in its evolution that I would love to try in 5 years or longer. There’s no rush. 98 pts with upside.
2007 Futo - Double decanted 2 1/2 hours prior to dinner. Ripe, full-bodied and opulent. Beautiful from the word go featuring blueberries and blackberries. Large CF component. Very smooth and great purity of fruit. Right in its prime for me. 98 pts
2007 Abreu Madrona Ranch - The most complex of the three reds we devoured. Wasn’t sure it was going to come around when I first opened it but 90 minutes after double decanting it certainly did. A nice amount of CF I’m sure. It’s black-fruited with a streak of red berries and a hint of spice. Tannins are ripe but firm. It’s great and will stay there for years to come. 98 pts (Do you sense a theme?)
2007 Outpost True Vineyard - Tight at first. I would recommend a 60 minute decant if consuming now. Surely will have the longest life of the three reds. Deep blue and black fruited with nice minerality. A powerful 100% Cabernet and, yes, 98 pts.
While qualitatively very similar, they took turns as WOTN which I found enhanced the experience. Futo out of the gate was on top, then Abreu and the last sips of the Outpost were it’s best. What was surprising to me was that only two of us are big fans of big, rich and ripe (modern) Cabernets. One was decidedly old world and one right in the middle. And yet, we all agreed on these beauties.
I hope this is helpful.
Cheers!
