What bottle of wine did you open today? (Part 2)

Climate change, an awkward blend with too much Merlot, style change, palate drift? I used to enjoy those, not anymore. It smells better than it tastes. A bit cloudy, with some depot. Hot, pruney, syrupy, slightly bitter on the finish (on day 3 even more so). Licorice, red tea, spice, strawberries. That’s how I remember my last Amarone a couple years ago.
Those used to cost 12 Euros.

I don’t get the (non Rayas) Reynard wines really.

We drank the 2019 of this recently in a restaurant and for €55 it was ok but no more, hard with food, but better once I asked them to chill it.

They get a lot of insta hype here for some reason.

The brand is everything these days.
My younger myself would disagree, today my wiser (or palate shifted ?) self agrees… I have very fond memories of say Chateau des Tours 2012. But the last Vacqueyras I had was quite awkward, the last les Tours blanc was a hot mess.
I see those offered for > 100 Eur. Those who buy at those prices can have mine as I stopped buying.

Pretty decent and I got it at such a bargain!!

Edit: better than pretty decent. Good.

I guess it is a palate drift? I don’t feel like they changed a lot between 2009 and 2016 which is where I have most experience with Reynaud’s wines.

You notes describes the wines pretty well…
They can certainly feel big and with a bit of heat. But for me it is the nose thats awesome and unique. Certainly not reminiscent of any Amarone I ever had, which is what i grew up with (Amarone is a big thing in Denmark ).

I know, they always get lots of stars in the Superbrugsen wine magazine …

Sour and sweet sensations. But almost depleted for any notes. Back in the fridge for a few days

Are you implying that the 2019 kabinett is shut down? :face_with_monocle:

Compared to the 2021 a few months back, then this is shut down. But lets see what a day or two can do.

2006 Magdelaine PnP and drank over two days. Better than I expected. First day had a very perfumed nose of moss and dried leaves Palate showed some mint as well as leather and tobacco. A slight bitter finish and some acid. Second day, the nose was bigger and more ripe mulch notes. The palate was much more funkier with mushroom notes. The finish was more bitter and acidic on the second day.

2013 iOTA Pinot Noir. Love this stuff.

Delicious and quite forward for a young Magdelaine. I suspect this will also age very well. 1st bottle from a six pack. Will hold off opening this vintage for a few years.

Very nice, and still has several good years ahead it it. Opened as a tribute to a deceased friend.

From last Tuesday night. Wine theme was 1998 at 25 years. These two were absolute stars. The Jadot CdB was a reference point red burg for me (I was very surprised as someone who has been a Jadot skeptic for many years). Both were youthful with lots of depth and complexity. The Clos de Ducs had very refined fruits but the CdB was on another level

The 1998 Gazin was a remarkably youthful and powerful expression of Pomerol. Such depth and length, tons of time left in this one. All the Pomerol food groups represented here , esp the meaty aspect that is very Gazin

The VT was a bit overshadowed. Very pretty and delicious but not in the same class as the Gazin

Trapiche Iscay Syrah Viognier 2013, Mendoza, Argentina.

A successful imitation of Northern Rhone. Salty, meaty, white pepper, some blackberries, floral notes like violet. An elegant wine with some alcholic end, just some. With only an hour of airing, it is certainly not at its best. I will retest at dinner.

Consider the price, it is a triumph.

Edit:
Marquis d’Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Champans 2014
Restaurant purchase. They had the 13, 14 and 15 for a very decent price. I went through CT notes to help me pick a vintage and there was no clear winner. So I went with my overall appreciation of vintages. 14 it is.The color is just starting to show some age. Very light orange (not even bricking) meniscus and the whole robe shows a true Burgundy red color. Drank over 2 hours. The nose is very nice: red berries (cherry, strawberry), some light oak spices notes, forest floor going on summer truffles but what really gets you are the florals. Beautiful florals that work hand in hand with the red berries. Nice. Medium-minus body with medium acidity and very fine but lively tannins bringing freshness. Good length that brings back those florals and red berries. I like this a lot. Which goes to show, CT notes are great but everyone’s palate is the ultimate judge.
