Clos des Ducs
I had the Champans 14 in 2023 and it was drinking well. Caveat, I’ve mostly found all villages and 1er from Côte de Nuits ready to go in the last 2 years (Côte de Beaune are mostly not though).
Marquis d’Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Champans 2014
Restaurant purchase. They had the 13, 14 and 15 for a very decent price. I went through CT notes to help me pick a vintage and there was no clear winner. So I went with my overall appreciation of vintages. 14 it is.The color is just starting to show some age. Very light orange (not even bricking) meniscus and the whole robe shows a true Burgundy red color. Drank over 2 hours. The nose is very nice: red berries (cherry, strawberry), some light oak spices notes, forest floor going on summer truffles but what really gets you are the florals. Beautiful florals that work hand in hand with the red berries. Nice. Medium-minus body with medium acidity and very fine but lively tannins bringing freshness. Good length that brings back those florals and red berries. I like this a lot. Which goes to show, CT notes are great but everyone’s palate is the ultimate judge.
