Reluctantly, I’ve concluded I’m not a huge fan of Bedrock syrahs. But Petite Sirah is another matter. This was earthy and unctuous and yet perfume-y, in a characteristically Bedrock fashion. And yes, it was still a baby, but the fruit and structure were playing very well together. This was a very nice pairing for some burnt ends. I’m looking forward to drinking my remaining bottles every five years or so, as long as I cling to life.
Ahhh, it’s a good day when i see my man @amjohnstone posting a TN…especially a Bedrock TN!
Really appreciate this one as I’ve been debating whether or not i should check in on the PS. Glad to see you’re drinking well this Labor Day weekend my friend
Lush fruit (like berry pie filling), soft tannins, and a bit of a acidity. PnP. Should pair well with the pot roast we have on tap for dinner tonight. Wish I had a couple more of these.
2015 Monte Rosso Zinfandel. Yum. Still very high toned, maybe pomegranate spiked with anise on the nose. Lots of fruit, definitely on the red side w that candied side that this bottling tends to show for me. Candy apple for grown ups in a glass. I like it.
Six years post harvest and this is right where I want it to be: an intoxicating nose of cherry and a savory palate, loads of acidity and slightly drying. Very moreish…
2013 Pagani from the recent library release. This was absolutely spectacular. I’m not sure what percentage of Petite Sirah is in here, but my first thought as soon as I sipped it was the PS was really standing out, in a good way. A muscular wine, but with excellent balance. Still lots of freshness, so this is nowhere near full maturity.
Very sad that they dropped Pagani. Really a special site and a great chance to compare Bedrock, Carlisle, and Ridge.
Btw if anyone has ‘18 Bedrock Pagani they’re looking to move, let me know… had a horizontal planned and accidentally drank my one Bedrock Pagani bottle thinking it was the 18 Papera.
2012 Dolinsek tonight. A. It of sulfur/funk after opening, but that blew off quickly. Color was lighter/more translucent than expected - more like a pinot. But, such nice red fruit on the nose with some lovely floral notes. long finish, with layers or flavor. Great wine.
To celebrate owning a little beach house now on the Southern Gulf of Mexico I hosted the lovely couple who introduced me to my current tasting group here in Mérida. While I love the city, it is tropical heat so having an escape will improve life a bit my remaining years.
This was extraordinary. Color had deepened considerably from release and the attack was very savory and not really sweet at all. Nuttiness and apricots in waves with a glorious finish. I only wish it was 3L instead of 375ml. Bravo MTP.
A bottle of the '17 Bedrock/Bedrock was staring me down in the wine fridge but I grabbed the '22 OVZ that was next to it instead. Gotta say the '22 OVZ is serving it’s purpose as a cellar defender perfectly. On the full/jammier side but very well balanced now.
I opened a 2023 Bedrock Vineyard Zinfandel last night. Beautiful perfume of raspberry, pomegranate, sagebrush, and peppery spice. Great earthy minerality intermingled with black raspberry and plum fruit on the palate, complemented by deft and precise leather and spice notes lingering over a long finish. This wine has concentration like I’d expect in a warmer vintage but is not heavy or tiring on the palate. It carries more freshness and tension on the palate than I’m used to seeing with other Bedrock zins/zin blends, with its high-toned fruit, bright acidity, and slightly coarse tannins that just need time to mellow and integrate. Clearly has immense potential and will need a lot of cellar time to unfurl.
