What Bedrock wine are you drinking tonight?

This is an underrated bottling every year. So good on a warm summer day and I never order enough. Not many producers are as adept at both reds and whites.

Kinda like asking mom to pick her favorite of her nine kids, a very challenging and political issue. I often wonder which Bedrock I love the most, so many of them are just so magnificent across the board. But if I had to narrow it down to just one, it would probably be this one. Or maybe it’s in a tight battle with Oakville Farmhouse, but maybe given the blends that is an unfair comparison. Each stands on its own.

This 2016 is everything that I love about this vineyard. Iron-inflected, red-fruited, citrus for for days, it’s just so powerful, elegant, and lifted all at the same time. The blood orange is completely palpable. I don’t know exactly how close it is to Sky Vineyards, but they are roughly the same elevation and in the same Mount Veeder Mountain range, and they do share that similar mountain fruit profile. It should not surprise, Sky Vineyards is my favorite Zin producer.

If you ask me what Zinfandel producer can age forever, it would be this bottle. This wine easily has another 30+ years in it, and I can definitely see it improving over the next handful of years and then hitting a plateau that it holds for a long time. Now, again, I’m just a silly country lawyer prognosticating over things that I know nothing about, but were I a betting man… @Rich_Brown will be popping this wine in 2042, I will be long dead, and @ToddFrench will be the King of Websites with WineBerserkers9.0.

2016 Dolinsek. With BBQ ribs and cornbread. Not as zippy as the bottle we had 2 years, but still going strong.

Funny that we are both drinking a 2016 with barbecue

I asked MTP about the 16 Monte Rosso when he came through town and he said they picked a little early at ~23 Brix and made the wine for longevity that year. That was the year Gallo cancelled all the purchase contracts so they didn’t think they’d get the fruit going forward, so 16 was made to age forever. After that conversation I’ve resolved to lay off my remaining three.

Well put my man (although my Mom would definitely say I’m the favorite child  )! Was literally thinking about this the other day and didn’t really have an answer…which is a good thing i guess. If pressed, I’d probably go Bedrock/ Bedrock and Farmhouse. For straight up, ‘easy drinking’ and delicious, I’m leaning Dolinsek. Just so damn tasty every vintage.

I’ll save a bottle! Maybe by then we’ll actually meet up in person and share a few bottles

Bedrock Bedrock is definitely one of the go-to bottles for me. I just picked up a four pack of the 2013 from K & L.

2019 Old Hill Whole Cluster.

Was lucky enough to snag a few of these so wanted to check in on one. For my tastes, this is REALLY young. Honestly, somewhat of a waste to open it now IMHO. So much old vine stuffing and potential with a unique, more ‘earthy’ profile to go along with the Old Hill fruit, but it needs a ton more time. Im gonna hold my remaining bottles for quite a while (i.e. years not months).

Decades?

Good question! I wouldn’t be surprised given how long-lived the Ravenswood Old Hill zins have been, but I’m planning to wait at least 3 to 5 years before opening the next one (and will hopefully do a side/side with the ‘standard’ version  )

Monte Rosso for sure.

Thank you Rich, I have been eyeing mine thinking of drinking it this fall with the kiddos during football games. Will now wait a few years…maybe will wait until your next tasting note!

15 York Creek Vineyard.

Red fruit on the nose with a darker body on the palate. This one was out of primary and open for business. Crazy white flower nose coming off of this with a dark raspberry fruit. Tannins seemed to pick up with time, feels like this has a long life ahead. Nice to try side by side with the W&M, both were great but different with the steak.

Yeah, I popped one about a year ago and it clearly needed WAY more time. Got better over 3 days open but I won’t touch remaining bottles for at least five years.
