What Bedrock wine are you drinking tonight?

Was St Cosme? He went ballistic on my take of that one.

No it was a 2021 Tensley Syrah. He had recommended it as a better alternative to the Bedrock Syrah. So I bought some and gave it 88 points noting that it did not have much complexity, and if my memory is correct he commented almost instantly on my rating. He also posted an unusual number of notes on the Tensley to increase it’s rating after my 88. I had no idea he had this reputation, but he was so intense I was convinced he had some sort of financial connection to the Tensley. I just blocked all his notes/comments so don’t see them anymore.

Ha! That’s right he did have a weird thing for Tensley. I haven’t had one in a while but your note seems pretty spot on from what i recall. Nothing wrong with them and tasty enough…but definitely not very exciting or complex.

For those who were not around when he was posting (John Glas is his name) he was regularly somewhat of a whipping boy around here and was trying hard to make his '3-day wine reviews ’ a thing…even for wines that have zero business being consumed over that long of a time frame.

He definitely was not nearly as aggressive here as he seems to be on CT which is really interesting.

Well … out of curiosity I may have to unhide him!

In fairness I thought the 21 Tensley appellation Syrah was pretty good!

Perhaps not worth 26 tasting notes tho.

Yeahhhh. Something to that for sure. He must have some sort of ties with them.

I would love an invite as I am in the over 50 club too!!

He’s fallen into that ā€œWine Influencerā€ trap and it’s gone to his head. I’m sure you are fully aware of what I am referring to. I used to post a ton of notes and for a couple years. When my schedule allowed me to drop in on Mike Smith every week and I helped a couple of harvests, I got access to a lot of wines that were above my pay grade and I was posting notes. Before too long I started receiving random bottles or three packs from various winemakers and it became obvious what was happening so I backed off on the notes and the wines stopped coming in. While it was cool at first and frankly I was honored that they thought that highly of my opinion, it made me uncomfortable. I do this for the enjoyment but when it seemed like there were now expectations I couldn’t play that game. Integrity is one thing I cannot compromise on.

Back to our regular programming-Bedrock!

Shared these gems Easter Weekend with family.

All showed excellent with the Pagani still having plenty of time left.

The Syrah after a 90 minute decant really surprised us. Beautiful nose of red and black fruits, the mid palate was very flavorful with red and black cherries, pepper, baking spices, tannins a bit firm but soften the longer the wine was open. We drank over a 2-3 hour period. Medium plus finish.

Another bottle of 2020 California Syrah and while this one seems a little brighter, it’s still savory and delicious. Glad I bought a case of this.

Any notes on that Roussanne? Very interested in that one.

Evanghelo is always so elegant to me. This 2017 is no exception, really lovely balance and mid-weight. Not a big Zin. Love the translucence to the color, speaks to me that this is a food-friendly wine. Lots of bramble and spice, peppery too!

I love that one

2018 Once and Future Old Hill Ranch vs 2018 Bedrock Old Hill Ranch

I’ve wanted to do this for awhile, some good medical news was a great reason to do it tonight. So my wife and I are tasting side by side, non-blind.

I’m going to disappoint a lot as my notes aren’t good. Apologies in advance.

We are mid-stream, still a few glasses to go.

O&F cork came out clean, Bedrock broke with about a third left in the bottle. It ended up in the bottle after an errant Ah-so attempt to remove.

Both were pop n pour. On the nose, the Bedrock had a little something extra. Slightly more distinct.

First sip, the distinctive flavor profile sticks with Bedrock. O&F is very monolithic, but not in a bad way.

Second sip, there is a lightness to Bedrock while the O&F starts to demonstrate a level of power with its flavor level growing.

Before we hit the second glass, we put our votes in. It’s 2-0….

Damn this is fun!

End of 2nd glass, man this is close. They are separating themselves with their flavor profiles, both delicious. But going in two different directions.

Midway through third glass, we are calling it. Both my wife and I agree, Joel for the win!!!

O&F kept a bolder flavor profile, more to our preference through almost two hours of tasting. We still love Bedrock Old Hill, but in this instance, 2018 side by side, the O&F by a nose.

Both nailed the essence of Old Hill.

This was fun (and I’ll continue to follow tonight), next time, I’ll throw a Bucklin Ancient Field Blend into the mix. All 2019s…. To be continued!!!

Thanks. I have bottles in the cellar with the plan to do the same in the future. Nay wife and I both enjoy doing comparisons like this or two bottle verticals. I think it is very informative.

BTW, my notes are similar to yours when we do this. It isn’t about specifics, it is which do we prefer and for what reason. We often disagree, which is great as she takes the remainder of one bottle and leaves me the other, win - win.

2009 Dolinsek. This is still a baby, lots of fruit and well balanced. Has yet to reach its peak. Wish that I had a few more bottles.

Raspberry and white pepper. In a really nice place. Popped and poured. Stretched it out almost three hours.
