The Bourbon Thread

Just picked up a bottle of this in RI. No clue what it is, but getting nice reviews.

Just heard from a friend that Pappy allocations have hit VA and MD. Has anyone seen or heard of Pappy sightings anywhere else?

Elijah Craig 23 just hit here, but $200 seems a bit steep?

I’m seeing it all over, and tasted it on Monday night. It’s good, but IMO not worth the price. The EC 18 is much better (but you can’t find it.)

Also had the ER 17…wow. That is great stuff!

Totally agree on the price point for EC23.

Bone, how much were pours of each?

Bartender just received them and they weren’t in the system yet…so I was able to get an industry rate. ;-D

And he wasn’t sure what he was going to charge yet.

This hit SoCal last week. I wanted to open it yesterday to celebrate the Giants winning the series, but better late than never. I’ll cut to the chase. This is fantastic. I think an epic release from Parkers. No need to cut it at all. Bit of heat on the nose and finish, but in a good way. This was very limited in SoCal. Where PHC 7 (POH) sat on shelves for months, this one is gone the same day. If you see it, buy it. Buy all you can.

I concur with this ^^^^^ 100%…

Some of my favs:

Booker’s
Old Forester
Blanton’s
Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit
Rare Breed
Evan Williams Black

Just counting up the successes this season:

2 - (originally 3, but turned out only 2) Parkers 13yo Wheater
1 - Rhetoric
1 - EC 23
2 - Old Forrester ‘Birthday’
4 - 4Roses LEsmB
1 - George T Stagg

So with Pappy coming (maybe I get a 20yr. Maybe), I whiffed on the 17yo Eagle Rare. Wish I got that one as it sounds fantastic.

Anyone want to swap a 17yo ER for a 4Roses LEsmB??

Is there anything special about Old Grand Dad 114?

So Peter, how deep is the bunker? I do keep my “extra” bottles in the cellar, but just because it is easier. Though when I look at 30 bottles of unopened liquor I do wonder if that is too much, too little or if I am crazy.

Some more I like:

Woodford Reserve
Bulleit Frontier
Buffalo Trace
Wild Turkey 80
Wild Turkey 101
Four Roses Small Batch
High West Whiskey - Rocky Mountain Rye - 21 Year Old
Baker’s

Travis,
Yeah. I know. Same here. When I see a good deal on something that’s both hard to get and really tasty, I just buy it. I own around 100 bottles of hard liquor, of which at least 1/2 (and maybe 2/3) are bourbon and maybe 10-15 of the bourbons are open.

John,
of the ones you’ve mentioned, I like Blantons the most (that’s my go-to in most bars). Rowans Creek would fit in there nicely…

Ha! Me too!

Probably been talked about, is Bookers 25th Anniversary a $100 Bourbon? A local shop recently received 9 bottles. Peter has made me feel like I need to stock up on the hard to get Bourbons. Wasn’t easy to come by a couple of months ago when it first arrived.

Travis. I think I’d pass. Bookers never really got me going. For me, it’s too young to carry that proof. I like my ‘high test’ stuff with more age on it (at least 12 years and really more like 15+ years). But that’s just me. Or maybe I’d grab a bottle and give it a try but no more…

The winners this fall season, if you can find them, IMHO, are.

BTAC (for me, Stagg, ER17 and WLW as I don’t love straight rye)
4Roses LE (smB the winner, but I’m happy to take the SB)
Parkers
Pappy (the 23 is now a myth. Got to hope for the 20 and be happy with the 15)

So hard to get this stuff, if you see any do not delay!!! Grab with both hands and worry about it later.

Do you find the taste changing (oxidation?) after a bottle has been open for a period of time. I’ve been drinking some of last years Stagg and bottles of Thomas Handy and Pappy 23 that have been open maybe 2 years. I find the Pappy 23 so different from the 20 that I can’t tell if it has changed, but it seems to me the Stagg and Handy have lost a bit of their taste. I’ve been tempted to open a Jefferson 17 or 18 from my stash, but I’m starting to think I want to only open one special bottle at a time and drink it until gone, over the course of a month or two, along with everyday Blanton’s or Four Roses.

Had a couple glasses of Old Forester last night. Two small ice cubes to dilute a bit.

Fantastic aromatics. Bit harsh on the palate but smoothes out with air. For the price ($16 near me) this is a great bargain.
