I had Wild Turkey “Tradition” earlier this month. Not sure how it differs from the Diamond, but Tradition sells around $120. It was a good $60 bourbon with $60 in packaging (pretty impressive packaging!). FWIW, WT Rare Breed is my go to bourbon for under $40 (which I sincerely hope they didn’t screw with the flavor profile by bumping the proof from 108 to 112).
Have heard from a couple of sources that it will be hitting SoCal/Bay Area in the next couple of weeks. Curious to see the mark-up from our usual source; I saw a 20 year on the shelf in Lafayette for $700
Anyone had Larceny? It’s a Heaven Hill product, and looks like it could have taken the place of Old Fitz. Thoughts on taste? Worth the price? I’m intrigued, but don’t know what to compare it to. Thanks.
Larceny is wheated and if you like Maker’s you should like Larceny. It is inexpensive, and in Lexington was $37 for a 1.75L. I bought a bottle last year and drank it. 2 weeks ago while taking the Evan Williams tour in Louisville, the tour guide said larceny was only in 13 states and only 400 barrels are made per year. I thought they produced more than that. They poured it there as part of the tour. I personally like Maker’s and Larceny in an old fashioned.
As for the notes on Angel’s Envy, Lincoln Henderson (RIP), the master distiller who invented that whisky, was the one who invented Woodford Reserve and is a highly acclaimed bourbon guy. I like AE as a night cap, neat and drink an ounce or so before bedtime, and alternate with Red Breast 12. At 80 proof it’s what I like after cocktails, wine and dinner. Instead of cognac or armagnac. Obviously a personal and very subjective experience as is most everything.
Thanks for that info Jack. I’ll have to look for it in one of these 13 states: California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Missouri, North Carolina, New York, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia.
Speaking of GA, I found some Old Charter 10 Year old for $15.99 / 750ml. As I said, I’ve read that this is now going into either Eagle Rare 10 or Stagg Jr. This is really tasty juice at the price! I found it in Savannah FYI. I think I’d rather have a case of this, Weller 12, etc. than one bottle of Pappy these days. Definitely a consumption situation ;-D
I’ve heard good things about that 10 yr old Old Charter. Also about Ancient Ancient Age (AAA). I’ve not tried either one. I agree about Weller 12 but was told it was going to be very difficult to get in the future “because it is being aged for Pappy.”
Right now I’m sipping an 18 yr old Elijah Craig and it’s very nice.
I’m not a big fan of Larceny. Good thoughts by Jack above - if you’re looking for something like Maker’s but cheaper, it could be your thing. If you can find a Weller, go for that instead. Has anyone tried the recently released Maker’s Cask Strength? Never been a huge fan of MM but figured it worth a try at $28 per 375. Heard that previously, it may have only been available at the distillery?
I think I paid $44 at the distillery for mine. That’s for a 375. Batch 14-01, 113.2 proof. Bought 3 and gave 2 as gifts. Several bars in Louisville and Lexington had it on their lists and I tried it there but haven’t opened my own bottle.
Found it interesting. Lots of caramel, apple, honey like other bourbons. I added a little water. Enjoyed it but would buy the Maker’s 46 instead, or even regular Maker’s.
Scored one lonely bottle of the 14 4R LESmB. Not complaining, I know what a score it is/was, but a bummer that this too has become a flippers dream which means a PITA to acquire.
Picked up a a couple bottles at the Bourbon Heritage Center in Bardstown, KY. Opened one last night with friends. Nose was hot initially but after the alcohol blew off it was a very pleasant oaky, caramel, corn typical good bourbon nose. Tasting it was tough At 128 proof and I watered it some to calm it down. Pleasant and what I would call a good bourbon and am happy to have it in the bar but for the price could do much better with a host of other bourbons. I think it will make a good old fashioned.
Maker’s Cask Strength just hit SoCal. Not sure how widely this will be available locally and nationally. Picked up a couple of bottles. $40 for 375ml…ouch. Cute little bottle.
