Rose in May

Every year we host a gathering in late May to taste (or in some cases, swill) a variety of roses and crowdsource the answer to “what rose should we all buy for the summer”.

Suggestions for good and interesting bottles? Needs to be still rose that’s available for shipping to NY.

Obviously, a tasting of Burgundy grand crus with a group of MWs this is not … we’re looking for the absolute best glass of pink to pair with a pool inflatable and a good book.

Particularly Le Rosé de Pauline. Good stuff.

Adding a few others below

Domestic:

  • Bedrock
  • Liquid Farm
  • Gamble family

French:

  • Joseph Roty
  • Clos Cibonne (several cuvées, all good for their price point)
  • Vacheron
  • Pibarnon

All should be pretty easy to find and $20-40.

White Zin, of course.

Joguet makes a very fine rosé at a reasonable price. The 2021 is widely available in the low $20 range…EnoViti: 2021 Chinon … Recently I bought a few more out of a Michigan wine store as it allowed me to get some Michigan wines from Bel Lago at the same time. In fact it’s $15 right now rom Plum Market in Michigan.

I’ve tried half a dozen domestic 2022s so far. My favs: Ridge + Arnot Roberts. I didn’t like the 2021 AR at all and it was good to see the 2022 back to form. Ridge also varies quite a bit from year to year but I haven’t had a real outlier yet. Both wines are well below 13%, which I really like. YMMV.

Clos Cibonne, as others have said - one of my favorite roses is their Cuvée Spéciale des Vignettes but it could come across as too complex and serious (it’s delicious). If you are seeing this in a store be careful as there is one other wine where the label is only marginally different. I haven’t tried their Tentations which is less expensive and probably an easier sipper.

Two from CA that I really enjoyed all last summer - you would probably need to order directly from winery:
Saintsbury Vin Gris - Product — Saintsbury Winery
Calafia “The Princess” - Wines « Calafia Cellars - Hand-Crafted Red Wine from Napa Valley

A few delicious ones that I haven’t had as extensively:
Clos Ste. Magdeleine Marie De Magdala
Muga Rosado
La Bargemone Cuvee Marina

Far and away my favorite domestic rose is Ceritas…followed by Enfield Foot Trod, L’Aventure, Bedrock, and Arnot-Roberts…

Opps, forgot to add Hardy’s Extradimensional Wine Co. Yeah! 2021 Summer Salters Rose. Definitely belongs in that list.

I’ll be going with the Sabelli-Frisch White Zinfandel, if I can lay my hands on a bottle or three.

Thanks all for the great suggestions.

Don’t sleep on German Rose!

All should be available.

I thought rose was like seersucker: It was only style-appropriate after Memorial Day.

That’s the frilly patio sippers. Good rose has its place all year round.

Two of our favorites are:

Bucklin Rose of Old Hill Ranch (White Zin, Grenache, Mataro, Syrah, Carigane)
Pisoni “Lucy” (White Pinot)

Have you tried Chateau Simone Palette Rosé? French Provence.

The most “strawberryish” rosé I have ever had; delicious! Age worthy, too.

I see Raeders Wines & Liquors sells it in NY, and other distributors ship to NY too.

I love Chateau Simone Rose, fine to drink in May or even winter.

Randall Graham’s new project The Language of Yes has a “pink” Tibouren which is really superb - I’m so glad I got them on Berserker Day.
