Joseph Colin Saint-Aubin 1er En Remilly 2022
Intense citrus acidity on entry, then pure white fruit behind. Expands on the midpalate, but remains tart. Deft use of oak adds a textural element. Finishes saline with acidity around the gums returning through the end. Always glad to open one of his wines, they’re just so lively and balanced.
This was pretty killer last night. Youthful vigor, dense white fruit, hints of barrel toast and rather explosive on the palate
Some impressions on 17s recently:
In a dinner: Matrot Meursault Charmes and Perrieres, Puligny Chalumeaux and Quintessence; Comtesse Cherisey PM Chalumaux; Ballot Millot Meursault Charmes. All open and showing fine fruit and balance. A touch of sweetness in several of these. No premox (all under natural cork)
Couple Leflaives - Pucelles and BBM - a bit tight, approachable but much more in reserve, would rather hold off on these a little longer.
Good to hear.
Any other experience with recent Matrot? I abandoned them almost 20 years ago after a ton of premix issues , but Envoyer had the 23 Meursault Charmes and chalumets in 375s, so took a flyer in a couple of each.
I think @robertl was at a dinner with them last week and liked them.
I seem to recall pouring out a full case each of '04 and '05 MP. No recent experience.
Unrelated, opened a '00 Raveneau Chapelot over the weekend that I’ve stored since release. Like the '00 MdT I opened last year, delicious and still very fresh. Needed a bit of time to open up.
Domaine Matrot Bourgogne Chardonnay 2022 was among 15 burgundies presented at a tasting dinner last week in Seattle (see March 5th. 7 Burgundy winemakers (Ponsot, Lambrays, etc) at Cafe Campagne). Considering style (what it’s intended to be), quality, and value, it was my favorite wine of the evening, which included several 1er Crus. This was my first exposure to Domaine Matrot; I have a good first impression.
Echoing @LSYoung (I was at this same dinner)
My first impression of Matrot as well. The Bourgogne punches way above its weight. Bright, a little nutty, and golden with apple and brioche flavors. Could only be Meursault. Amazing value for $40.
Her Meursault village has a richer palate with lemon curd, apple, and I got a little bit of struck match smokiness. Also a fantastic value
If they solved their premox issues, they’ve always had good raw material. There was definitely a period of time when Matrot and Boillot had like 100% premox rate though.
I’ve been luckier with Boillot than Matrot.
Assuming Henri Boillot, 50:50 on their 07s. The one 04 I had was great (tasted all 3 in 21/22)
Matrot was 100% premox for me (mostly 04s, quite a few).
Did I read they went to Diam ?
Just had 2016 H Boillot Corton Charlemagne. Pleasant surprise, this was quite fresh (I was prepared for the worst) with clear reduction remaining. Quite formidable fruit balance for the vintage. This bottle could’ve used another couple of years for the reduction to integrate with the fruit.
I had a 2022 Matrot Meursault Perrieres a couple of months ago that was showing very well.
Is Matrot going to be the next Leflaive? (Declining sales for years due to premox issues, fix the issue and then sales increase and they jack up the prices exponentially.)
I’ve had great experiences with Matrot 2022 whites as well. Chalumeaux and Meursault-Blagny were both excellent.
2017 Paul Pillot Grande Montagne - super young and tight. Coiled up like a spring. Flinty and mineral. Beautiful wine but needs time. Decanted for 3 hours, but showed better on day 2.
2022 Pierre Morey Tessons - flinty reduction with well judged oak. Classic Meursault showing beautifully with great acid and strong mineral backbone. Also, this was under DIAM! Unsure if they are just experimenting with the closure or standardizing it, but this was damn good white burg that I would buy if DIAM was the standard.
2014 Fourier - super floral, lithe and pretty red fruit and a softening tannic backbone. 14s (even Fourrier) have been super shut, but this wine seems to be opening up.
I opened the 2014 CC a month ago and it was spectacular. Quite fresh. Young so I might give my last one a couple more years.
Stonkingly good. Real density and richness, yet light on its feet with mineral cut and tension. As @Tom_Blach suggests, buy producer, not village.
2013 Boillot Puligny Montrachet Clos de la Mouchere
Stunning, with struck match on the nose, super fresh explosive white peach aromatics, intense palate presence with great acidity and grand cru weight, and a superb finish. I love this wine when it’s sound, and this bottle was fantastic.
Any notes on the Ruchottes?
