While Sarah has drunk many bottles over a much longer time span than I have, I will say that I can count on one hand how many times too much air has either shut down a young wine or broken an old wine. Whereas I have lost track of the myriad times a wine was served with too little air and didn’t blossom until the end of the night. But yet when you talk to most wine geeks, almost universally they are deathly afraid of giving a wine too much air. Doesn’t make much sense to me, so I do the opposite.
Hot damn, I must have totally whiffed on the meaning of “broken an old wine” when I was reading this post of yours. If I’d known what you meant when you said “old wine” was a “young-ish” wine I guess it would have changed my response! Thanks for clarifying the “red herring”! Very helpful!
Ok, let’s talk about old wines. I’ve had maybe one or two that completely broke with air. Typically these are poorly handled bottles or vintages that were already way past their prime. They were already showing tired on first open anyway. I’ve still had many more great old bottles that continued to improve throughout the evening. A lot of people drink old wine with unknown provenance and extrapolate that experience onto all old wine.
Can’t debate you on Bèze or CSJ as I haven’t had either in a long time. However, my experience with BM would place it above their Musigny. Is it the best BM ever? Not by a long shot. But to me it was recognizable as BM in a way their Musigny is not recognizable as Musigny, although a nice bottle of tasty wine. FWIW I always enjoyed their Beaune Clos des Ursules relative to its class, and when my LWS had some on discount years ago it was a very appealing value for a burg.

I opened Jadot’s Misigny and his CdBeze for pair tasting. For example Jadot’s Musigny with other and also Jadot’s CdBeze with others.
Jadot’s high-end reds are not my go-to and preferred Producers.
My message to PaulN was just a reference in facts. BUT…in any event, what ever your personal preference does not affect the the facts. No offense is intended - just my 2 cents. No need to argue how many angels could dance on the tip of a needle.
M-Chang. I just checked J.Morris. Indeed Jadot owns very small plot of Mujsigny; CdBezes and BM…whereas he owns 1 ha of CSJ That being noted : Jadot’s 3 high reds are easily available in Quebec, Canada. For example. SAQ still has multiple bottles of his 2020 BM at CA$683 but seldom his CSJ.
FYI only. My personal favorite and go-to wine red is Jadot’s CdBeaune 1er cru : Clos Ursules - a Monopole on the label. Jadot,s holding is 2.15 ha. The 2022 will be available but quite pricey in Canada at a whopping at CA$170.25.

My 90 year old dad simply STUNNED by the 2002 Jadot Bonnes Mares. Boy oh boy am I glad that my threashold for ‘wow factor’ is lower than that of @Sarah_Kirschbaum , because for all of us tonight this was a massive WOW. Deep, dark and unrelenting, this was a wine of gravity, integrity, perfume, and a two hour journey of tannins going from slightly grippy to satin. Throughout the whole thing the nose went from high to high. Red fruits, spice and smoke right out of the gate, turning darker and darker to dried black currents at the end. The last sips presented a pure velvet mouthfeel. Consumed with a hot toasty baguette and Epoisses - 96 points.
I feel like you’re damning this wine with faint praise. To me, Clos des Ursules can be a truly excellent burg. (99.99% of burg drinkers NEVER get to taste any Musigny, so I admittedly might be a bit sensitive. This thread can get weirdly distorted.)
I have now had a couple of very well stored bottles of 2002 Ursules, it is simply ravishing wine. Have had at least a half dozen bottles of other stuff, triple the price that weren’t even in the same ballpark, maybe not even the same sport.
If my comments sounded like faint praise , I didn’t intend them that way. I really have enjoyed Clos des Ursules. It’s also not fair to say that it is a substitute for, say, a Leroy GC. All I meant was that Clos des Ursules in my experience has been a good value for money, and that I have seen it at a discount which makes it even better value for money.
