Saline City Reprise–Pre Release of 2023 Chardonnay

View due West toward the Van Duzer Corridor’s low horizon as seen above Bracken Vineyard, with Sojeau’s arced rows hugging the ledge below its Oak Grove. Photo credit Shelby Perkins

We bottled three Chardonnay cuvĂ©es from the 2023 Vintage last week, and are feeling optimistic they could be our best efforts in White Wine. They represent a narrow view of the “Eola Bench”— the outcropping of fractured Basalt hugging the Western ledge of the Southern Eola-Amity Hills, including the neighbor vineyards that support our entire program: Sojeau and Bracken. (You can find other offerings from Bracken Vineyard by its owner @ShelbyPerkins (“BD Grower Galore”, and a participant in BD16 under the Perkins_Harter Label). The relationship this ledge has with the Van Duzer Corridor and the Pacific Ocean cannot be overstated, staring directly through its low horizon from the mature Oak Grove that functions as the fulcrum of the two plantings (as seen above thanks to Shelby’s drone work this past Fall)

Despite sharing a border, the Chardonnay blocks differ in elevation by some 200 feet; the lowest block of Sojeau being its most boulder strewn three acres of Chardonnay, and the varying blocks at Bracken beginning above the top of Sojeau, growing in shallower top soils with more early day shade from the steep forest above to the East. The generosity of texture and intense aromatic spectrum in Sojeau offers a unique foil to Bracken, where an electric sense on the palate pushes the wines in a leaner direction with more crystalline/mineral drive. Despite their modest alcohols, these wines show density and strength, vibrating more toward the end of their incredible length, such is the integration, balance, and integrity in these fresh, new wines.

-Bracken Blanc 12.2% alcohol 90 cases produced $65 retail
-Sojeau Blanc 12.7% alcohol 70 cases produced $65 retail
-Willamette Valley Chardonnay (60/40 Bracken/Sojeau) 12.4 % alcohol 200 cases produced $35 retail

Bottled January 21st, 2025.

Berserker Day Pricing represents a “Pre-Release”, as such, volumes are limited

The Witness “Tree-O”—Three Vintage, Mature Vine Vertical | Witness Tree Vineyard ’21, ’22, ‘23

Sunrise at Witness Tree Vineyard, Harvest 2022

Having bottled our third edition from the high blocks of mature plantings from the historic Witness Tree Vineyard last week, we thought it would be fun to offer a vertical for BD16. While most of the vineyard was replanted over several years beginning in 2017, several acres of high density mature vines from the late 1990s were left on the shallow bench at the top of the steep, East facing slope, adjacent to Cristom’s Eileen Vineyard and the lower border of Argyle’s Spirit Hill. We like to include 10-20% of whole clusters in our open top fermentations of Witness Tree.

’21 is all about purity, gorgeous rounded tannin, deft and crisp. This is bottled exclusively from the ’99 Pommard on the ledge of the ridge. Better and better every time we pop this. Bottled late March, 2023 after 16 months of barrel aging. 12.8% alcohol, 95 cases produced. (The remaining cases of this wine will limit the offerings number) $65 retail

’22 is fresher, funkier, and full of salinity. These are wines for the more classic Pinot champion, brisker on the palate, more solidly framed. We included half the ’99 block, but also half from a 2012 planting higher up the hillside, directly adjacent to the older planting but running in perpendicularly arranged rows. All Pommard, high density, single cane pruned and thinned to one cluster per shoot. Such a baby but with head turning balance and verve. Bottled late February, 2024 after 15 months of barrel aging. 13% alcohol, 140 cases produced. $65 retail

’23 feels like our best effort from the site, selected from just two barrels of the old vine lot. The depth of tannin was remarkable from the older vines, with a slightly darker fruit core balanced by a restrained, fresh acid profile. The soulfulness we notice in mature, dry farmed vines seemed to put this in a league of its own in our cellar. With one of the two barrels included being new, we recommend this sees some time (like 8-10 years of bottle age) to reach the potential we believe it can have. Bottled January 21s, 2025. 13.2% alcohol, 45 cases produced. $65 retail

The limited volume we have left of the ’21 vintage will dictate how long this offer can stay open.

2023 Pinot noirs from the two iconic vineyards in Polk County: Temperance Hill (Eola-Amity Hills) and Freedom Hill (Mt. Pisgah)

Bottled last week, we have only superlatives for these two wines.

Our first from Freedom Hill, a truly regal package of spiced red fruits and distinctive structural integrity. The Heritate block, planted in 2001 in the heart of the site, stands up to be counted–as complete a wine as we have produced, and arguably our best in show wine for the vintage. We are too excited about this wine to leave it on the sidelines until its Fall release. 13.3% alcohol, 70 cases produced. $65 retail

Our oldest block of Pinot is the “12 Rows” of Temperance Hill. Crunchy, purple, floral galore. The savory elements that typify Temperance balance the core of gorgeous, dark fruit. Deft and taught, showing the classy, cool climate distinction its reputation has earned over decades. 12.8% alcohol, 70 cases produced. $85 retail

We appreciate your interest in and support of Violin, and of small business in general. Check out our website to learn more about Violin, or browse our selection of current release wines. www.violinwine.com

Cheers and thank you!

Just came here to say Will is the real deal (even if there’s no Cosmic Pipe in this year’s BD offer). He has a tremendous encyclopedic knowledge of winemaking and microclimates in Willamette Valley and the wines are all so regal and graceful. I had a wonderful visit with him last summer.

Thanks Brian, it was great to visit with you.

I could probably be talked into a swap of '21 Witness Tree for '21 Cosmic Pipe :rocket::ringer_planet:
two sides of a yummy coin

Hah! I haven’t opened the '21s I reloaded on in the fall. Saving 6 bottles to follow over time

Seems like have been seeing your wines more and more over the last couple years
definitely time to jump in tomorrow!! Really excited and intrigued by the Saline City packs-Chardonnay.

Thans Brad–happy to get you settled tomorrow. 23 Chards feel well positioned to be taught and delicious, if not a bit coiled for the next 6 months or so. We are so excited to include Bracken in the lineup, definitely a site that pushes toward acidity/balance/savoriness over opulence/weight (in Pinot noir as well)

So ready for this :clinking_glasses:

Just cracked a 2022 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir to “pregame.” So delicious and developing nicely.

Better on day 2, but good pregamer!

Pretty happy with the results but I like thin, green, and underwhelming as benchmark
