Official Dryuary (Dry January) 2026 Thread

Always strive for continual progress…Dry January…Damp February…Wet March as you head into Spring and Summer.

Tough idea to Swallow

extending Dryuary into February and adding some weight loss goals, blaming WB

Me too, no reason to plan the final ending so it’ll happen when the time comes. I weighed myself and was a few lbs lighter than normal but can’t remember the last time I checked. Maybe end of Summer. At least one meal per day has included a bowl of broth and lots of pickled/fermented and raw vegetables and they’re filling so that probably contributed to it. Also eating dinner much earlier than usual. I didn’t really cut any carbs and have a small portion of rice, quinoa, lentils etc every now and then.

Oh, Brad. You’re so thoughtful.

I get it. That said, Jan 1 is a pretty natural choice and everyone is making thier resolutions. I’ve usually been indulging between Thanksgiving and NYE so I’m ready and actually looking forward to DJ at that point. I don’t think I’d feel the same way if I started on 2/1.

This year was much easier than normal (to lose weight). Not sure why. But I joke, I usually do hand to hand combat with each pound.

I just meant the word “Dryuary” would fit equally as being Dry January or Dry February. Not commenting on whether anyone should do it one month versus the other. I certainly understand why it is something people do in January.

Maybe it should be Drynuary?

I lost an honest 14 lbs. Which tells me during the holiday season I went wild. I feel eating less now. I haven’t really drank a bunch since going off the plan…I went off Jan 29. As I said before the drinking wasn’t as hard as the carbs. I really missed a couple of cookies after dinner or the occasional cinnamon roll with coffee. We’re on our way to Zihuatanejo today and it’ll be interesting how I feel down there.

Dryuary side effect.

Had one gin and tonic with dinner. ‘Passed out’ on the couch by 8 pm.

Totally!

I thought Dry January had to do with pasta - no fresh pasta at all, all month. I don’t recommend it, though I continue to be a Fratelli di Cecco fan.

Had a glass of wine yesterday after a super long day of surf, lots of work and running errands. Walking home I stopped into a regular spot to say hi to some friends and was in the mood so had a glass of sauvignon blanc. Dec 31 - Feb 3.

Similar here. It was cold and I was hunting dinner. In the fridge was some leftover chili and a rauchbier. Both were enjoyable. Jan 1 - Feb 3. I’ll probably do a few more consecutive dry days throughout February.

I had my surgery on Tuesday. It went well and now the hard part (recovery and rehab) begins. I’m on some pain meds so booze is a no-no. I wish I could step on a scale easily. I’m curious.

Hey @Mike_Cohen, how is your recovery going? I’ll tell you what, the start of Feb. was SUPER easy for me to stay dry - I dunno what medication messes with my lower GI so much (obvs the oxy is not good, I stopped that on day 2), I’m only now getting back to normal digestion-wise, zero desire to drink. Feeling pretty good over here, hoping you are doing well (as well)!

Hey! Glad to hear that you’re doing well. My surgery was on 2/3 so I’m a bit over a week out. Recovery has been going pretty well so far. I was never in a lot of pain, more discomfort. I mostly stopped taking the percoset two days out of surgery. The GI issues are REAL. Frankly, it was one of my biggest fears. I have an incision right below my left butt cheek that is basically right on my sit bone. Between that, the meds, the anathesia, etc. it really messed with my stomach. I’m pretty sure that I’ve gotten past that phase over the last two days though or at least there is light at the other end of tunnel (LOL).

As far as booze and food. I’m in the same boat as you. While I love the idea of kicking back with a glass of wine, I really have very little desire. I haven’t even sat upright much. I never really discussed it with my doctor as I was doing dry January and just assumed I would keep doing it for a while. But I’ve had a pretty detailed back and forth with ChatGPT about the surgical recovery both from a physical and biological POV. Seems that booze negatvely affects all theses things. ChatGPT is suggesting no booze for six weeks and ideally eight weeks. So that takes my to later March, early April. Seeing the doctor on Monday so will ask him.

I’m kind of using this as a massive reset.

My timeline to full recovery is 5-6 months although realistically, it will be longer than that to recover the nuances in my skiing and golf. On a postive note, it seems that things really start to turn the corner after PT starts next week. How is your recovery? What does it look like?

lol, same boat!

Ankles are pretty complicated. My cast doesn’t come off until the 26th of this month (and stitches come out). After that, I get fitted for one of those big boots, and I can put static weight on it (but no moving) for a few weeks. PT should start 2-3 months in, and I’m looking at 6 months for full mobility, and 1 year for full recovery.
It’s a lot, and I cannot think too far into the future, it bums me out too much. Instead, small bites, one day at a time. Or, my favorite mountaineering phrase:

  • how do you eat an elephant?
    – one bite at a time

Oof – those are indeed long recoveries but it sounds like you both have a good plan.
