Tonight I will celebrate the end of Dryuary with my traditional bottle of @Vincent_Fritzsche ’s Gamay Noir , but I’ll be sharing it with 5 other people. Will also have some basic bubbly. That should keep me (and my dinner companions) to two glasses.
Love that! Good job! And well done with this thread each year now. It’s cool.
Most of you probably are too drunk to care by now but, just fyi, I finally made it to Day 31 of my personal Dry January.
Three years in a row now. Along with this thread, it’s a good tradition.
Yay! What are you opening?
Not sure yet, but I have a little more than a day to think about it. Sabelli–Frisch has been on my mind since Berserkerday.
The cellar could experience some real trauma on Super Bowl Sunday.
We recently opened the Giovanni Rosso 2004 Barolo Cerretta with similar success. Not much air - decanted only a few minutes before serving. The last one we had 1-2 years ago was disappointing, seemingly over-the-hill. This one was in the zone.
Okay, LFG! As predicted:
I will keep my promise to @Eugene_Bayani Yan to open a 2017 CS, but I will wait for the weekend so some geek friends can join in.
EDIT TO ADD: The out-of-focus pic brings back memories of when I used to drink wine.
I might open 1 as well during the weekend!
A person I know just finished Dryuary and said, “Without marijuana, I would have never made it.”
Win, or not?
So far, I’ve been alternating days that I have wine. To be fair, I have had a beer on the off days.
So far I’ve stayed off wine since coming back from San Fran, though I have raised carbs a little. While the extra carbs have led to much fuller muscles and greater strength in the gym, weight loss has now been completely stalled for 2 weeks. I’m not willing to go much lower in calories yet, as I want to preserve or even add a little muscle, so will see. Hard to stay away from some wine when the progress is stalled - I’m like “so why am I doing this now?!?”
Last night we had Smoking Goose ham steak al pastor with peppers and onions, served in a warm tortilla. I could really feel the second tortilla.
Yeah I added a bunch of water and muscle glycogen weight back; still up a couple pounds from when I stopped low carb on 1/27 but it’s starting to go down modestly. I decreased my deficit about 300 kcal so it was bound to slow anyways.
I guess my diet would now be considered much more “healthy” with morning protein oatmeal with manuka honey and berries, more berries, lean meats, fat free milk, still quite a few protein shakes, about 2300-2500 kcal with 250-275 protein.
Yeah, the smaller deficits are definitely better for recomp, but they take a lot of patience and trust in the process.
I can’t condone the fat free milk part, but the rest sounds pretty healthy, if a little boring.
I like fat free milk more than higher fat milks, the others just taste like heavy cream to me now; the fairlife has a lot of protein too, like 20g per tall glass.
I’m adding one treat item a week, which will slightly slow my progress, but also can potentially help me recover better, which has starting to be a bit of an issue. Putting in a cinnamon roll today on my rest day prior to the heavy push day tomorrow.
Kept my word. The 2017 Yan Cabernet Sauvignon has been open for about 2 hours next to a 2016 Ridge Estate Cabernet Sauvignon.
The Ridge is open, elegant, and dark fruited with some old-world hints of leather and tobacco in the background. It is in nice spot now, seemingly with many years to evolve and perhaps improve.
On this day, the Yan is more my cup of tea. It has more power and structure but is not as dark and brooding. Red fruit and floral with some brushy spice. The wine has a firm grip and long palate presence. It is a pleasure to drink. I am looking forward to the next few hours as it continues to unfold. Very nicely done!
Well said @Brad_S_w_a_l_l_o_w and thank you for your notes! I am glad you are enjoying the 17 Yan Cab
