Official Costco Thread

Not at all! A welcome role. Oddly, they always seem to have a few closeouts that tout a gaudy wine enthusiast score on the bottle or box. I have no idea why this is, but it’s a constant. Some used-to-be $25-35 rioja you’ve never heard of getting blown out for $9, wearing its dumb WE 92 proudly on its label.

Do you remember which vintage it was? I’ve seen the 2013 floating around locally, and if its $10/half that’s fair enough.

Some Costco’s had the 2013 Carmes de Rieussec for $10.50 and that was a nice deal for an immediate Sauternes drinker. Have not seen it back through.

It was the '13 as well. Assuming this is a wine not good enough to go into their regular bottling, is it worth buying up the lot and cellaring some?

Has anyone stumbled upon these Riedel stems everyone’s so excited about?

I called Costco twice and they said they don’t carry those anymore, but then got off the phone with a friend who bought a box the next day from the same store…

The Lions is tasty and suitable for purpose requiring a lighter style of Sauternes. Maybe with cheese at tea or lunch. I thought it a good value but wouldn’t expect to cellar it more than a year.

Simi Valley had a bunch of them yesterday. They did look a little shorter than I thought they’d be but the box clearly said “by Riedel” on them. I frankly prefer the Burgundy style glasses you can pick up at Cost Plus World Market for around $4/each, and they seem to be fairly sturdy unless I fail to slant them right and close the dishwasher drawer on the stem.

Thanks - I’ll just stick with a couple of bottles then.

I think they’ll be fine for a few years, and work well as casual / midweek style sipping Sauternes. We often keep half open bottles open in the fridge for days and those are good for that. My local Costco is asking a bit much for the 2013’s they have on the shelf at the moment, so I’ll wait. My belief is that the 2013 Sauternes will pick up the bad connotations as the dry reds, and eventually get deeply discounted.

2012 Gaja Ca’marcanda Vistamare at San Ramon Ca for 29.97…seemed like a good price. Still a few left.

The Coravin road show is at Costco in San Juan Capistrano, CA 1/13-1/22.

Coravin Model Eight $229.99

(includes 2 capsules)

12 Refills $69.99

Wow, that’s a great price for the refills. Thanks to the reco here I ordered generic ones from cartridge hombre and screwed on the plastic top from the Coravin cartridge (soak it in nail Polish remover for a night and then you can twist it enough to unscrew the cap) and it’s worked great and saves a ton of money…but this might be even cheaper.

Thanks for the heads up!

Yep, opened it and it was not so good, really bitter and harsh. Let the bottle sit about three days and now it’s ok. Not great but drinkable

Edit: I am giving this an upgrade 4 days after opening it really mellowed out and the bitterness is gone.
If I buy this again I will open it 4 days before I drink it.

Dallas area stores are clearing these out at $19.97 a bottle.

Keep hoping I’ll see someone post this has hit the SFO costco. I’d use my coravin more if I actually had refills
