still have my two bottles tucked away
Is there any big difference in quality of offerings between the locations that offer wine in-store vs. oneās that have a separate but attached Costco wine/liquor store?
Iāve been assuming all the frequently listed locations here are from proper in-store locations and that generally these have much bigger, better selections. But maybe thatās not the case?
All the wine is in store everywhere in CA, so no link to that. There seems to be a fair correlation with the affluence of the neighborhood, which I guess is no surprise. Each region has different wine buyers, and those buyers have āhome storesā that they work out of. My theory is that those home stores tend to get good selections, then the stores that have higher end customers get allocations of those better wines. There are stores that are known to have bigger, better wine depts. Marina in San Diego, Mountain View in bay area, Livermore and Danville in east bay. I donāt know the rest of the state well enough.
Ive had more success at Gypsum than RWC, but it could be that Gypsum steps up their game at xmas and RWC keeps sucking. Here is the good stuff from this Dec in gypsum. They also had a few 3L of Croix Ducru and several.other good middle of the road BDX, washington cabs and 2014 Louis Roederer. I just seldom see anything worth getting excited over in the mid peninsula stores. Mountain view is the best by far but less exciting than it used to be. I did find a few aged rieslings there last week, seemingly being sourced from Dee Vine wines and selling for a hefty discount vs what Dee Vine sells them for at retail.
As mentioned above, I got a couple of bottles from the Dee Vine stash. Prices werenāt as cheap comparatively as when they had their recent pop-up.
@Larry_Stein what was the pop up? Never saw an in-store wine pop-up before!
They donāt have a retail store front anymore. This was at The Morris in SF. The way to find out is by getting on their email list.
We have two Costco locations in town. The one in the less affluent side has a significantly better wine selection for some reason.
I buy 4-6 bottles of the Chablis every year. When I see it, I grab it, because it seems to only be around for a few weeks, and then it is gone until next year.
I have bought the Champagne many times. Does it live up to a bottle of Paul Bara at $50? No. But for $19.99, itās pretty good, and I am happy to pop a $19.99 bottle even on a weeknight when only half will get consumed and much will end up down the drain cause I am the only one drinking it.
Thanks, looking forward to trying it now!
Not a fan, but passable if you have family coming over. Usually some Albert Lebrun Grand Cru for $24-25 that is a better buy IMO.
These were all at #471 today. The Contino is the 2018 Reserva for $35. The Barolo is vintage 2016. Both Bordeaux are 2018
I like Croix de Beaucaillou quite a bit. Thatās a great price though I canāt see the vintage.
Looks like 2018.
I would have bought a couple. The 2016 and 2019 are both great.
I purchased four. Shared two last night at a group dinner.
The secret to this wine, in my humble opinion, is to give it another 12-18 months of bottle age. I suspect itās released too early to meet the price point. It puts on weight and gains a pleasant nuttiness. It will never be world class but I like it a lot after some short term ageing.
19 Palmer popped back up at Reno for $220. 2 left after the 3 I purchased.
Forgot to post but a few weeks back they had 19 Cos dāEstournel for 150 and Margaux for 440. Grabbed a couple of each. Probably should have cleaned them out on the 19 Margaux
definitely should have cleaned them out on the margaux! those are basically the EP prices. Iād love to get the margaux and palmers!
