At the Sherman Oaks, Ca Costco today. Ramos Pinto LBV 2011 and Dom '06 with two flutes for $15 cheaper than the single bottle of Dom '06 sitting a couple bottles over. Makes no sense⦠Bought a couple bottles of the LBV to try out.
Road testing Kirkland CdR and CCR tonight. Both great for the money. Obviously, CdR is riper and CCR is fresher, but both are respectactable for the price. You could do much worse. Would probably rebuy the CCR if I was looking for more wine in this price range.
Iām skeptical. Iām a big fan of Monsanto CCR. Iāll add that IMO Monsanto CCR needs about three more years after release to show its best, then drinks well for several years, with vintage strength factoring into the overall length of that window. I think Iāve consumed all of my '07s (the first year I bought) but they should still be going strong based on the last bottle I tried. The '08s I enjoyed less overall. The '09, '10 and '11 are all drinking well, and a sample bottle of '12 was way too young. So while I would expect that Monsanto CCR would crush Kirkland CCR, I really donāt expect the just-released vintage of Monsanto to show that well. Thatās just my opinion of course. However, in my experience the mystery brands, store brands, relabeled brands, etc., that are supposed to be just as good as the better-known brand very seldom are. Maybe never. There are brands that do very well with this model, and thereās value there if you like the product, but Iāve found itās best to be skeptical.
Even so, next time Iām there Iāll grab a bottle and give it a try.
It could have been a food pairing problem. Instead of pasta, you should have Kirkland meat. That would have really brought out the nuances, given their common terroir.
