The food is good. Everyone has their own favorite steakhouse and whether the price point is justified. But I the food is fine. Lamb T-Bone remains the best thing I have had there. I would do Rib Chop or Bone in Strip over the Porterhouse as well. A fun Youtube video on the spot to warm you up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azxp2M8evts
Personally, I prefer Korean/Japanese steakhouses to Western ones. Thinking of posting an offline event at Yakiniku Toraji in March… stay tuned…
Given that i believe every restaurant in k-town allows corkage with (in most cases) modest fee, i think your question becomes the best food. My vote would be either don bogam or yoon haeundae. Cote allows corkage as well if that’s your speed. In all cases, glassware will not be great.
yeah fellow Berserker Clifton D mentione yoon haeunde, and I was at New Wonjo with Eric Guido before Omicron dropped and we rolled in with some open bottles no issues.
Don’t believe Don Bogam offers corkage (or at least that’s what they told me a couple months ago). I would also suggest whether you prefer your meat cooked on a fire or skillet. Yoon Haeundae does offer corkage, but a skillet and I prefer fire. Right now I am really liking Yakiniku Toraji near UN ($15 corkage right now, but will likely increase in coming months) - it is Japanese, but similar style. Cote is $65 corkage, with added issue of getting a reservation.
If you don’t mind getting on the PATH train I believe KPot in Jersey City is still free BYO as well as being noticeably less expensive than the Manhattan options. About a 10 minute walk from the Grove St. station.
I’ve had better Korean BBQ but it is very good. Biggest negatives are the 90 minute time limit for seating and the no reservations policy (so go on an off night or arrive early). Biggest plus is that for a few dollars more you can also get hot pot.
If I have to wait for a table I usually do some shopping at 99 Ranch.
Well, tell us more? Being a Queens resident, I’m of the view that the Korean food options in Queens are a little generic and behind the curve these days compared to Manhattan (for fancier fine-dining type meals) or NJ (which has more restaurants that specialize around certain dishes, e.g., Korean-style sashimi, soondae, etc.) but more than happy to be convinced otherwise.
How is it generic? Or are you saying authentic is generic? I for one prefer authentic than “fusion” or “fancier” where the flavors just doesnt do it for me or dont call to home in any way. Or having to pay for basic bahn chans like kimchi. If we see this differently then my suggestions wont fit your bill.
OK, to explain where I’m coming from, my wife and I both grew up in Korea, cook fairly decently, eat Korean food at least 50% of the time at home (and since the pandemic began, almost every meal has been at home) and our fridge is stocked with banchan that we either make or order from various banchan subscriptions. So I don’t really find there’s much incentive for us to eat out at a Korean restaurant for dishes that I know we can replicate pretty well at home. I will, however, go out of my way to try things I can’t do at home, which includes fancified Korean dining, or to get my fix of certain dishes that are hard to procure/prep. So by “generic”, what I meant is perhaps closer to “staple”.
I hired a VA to put together a list for the Upper East Side of Manhattan.
