Most interesting White Wine in the world…

For me rn it’s PNW white Rhône varietals, but I’m newly geeky, so what do I know.

Envinates Palo Blanco is a really interesting and a good wine.

Michelini I Mufatto, Certezas Semillon. Super interesting old vine Semillon from Argentina.

Besides Burgundies (I favor Puligny-Montrachet) so they don’t have to be Grand Cru I only once had a bottle of Chave Hermitage White that I found very “interesting”

I forgot Sketch…I should have certainly had Sketch on that list too…

Tiberio’s Fonte Canale should be in the running with Pepe and Valentini.

I would throw in the ring:

  • Lopez de Heredia with lots of age, as mentioned
  • Musar Blanc, also with lots of age, also as mentioned
  • Bernaudeau Nourrissons
  • 1980 Huet “Vin de Glace”
  • 1989 Pierre Sparr Mambourg Gewurztraminer VT (maybe in other vintages, too, but only ever had '89)
  • The right bottles of Coulee de Serrant

If we are counting bubbles:

  • Sansonniere Methode Ancestrale
  • That Lauer Sekt with like 30 years before disgorgement.

I am choosing to define “interesting” as perhaps a bit different from “best” or “favorite,” but while still being great wine.

i.e. not just “weirdest.”

Exactly what I thought on reading first post…

It used to be cheaper. Sorry about that.

That is the “top shelf” of that section. To me those are the most profound white and rose… Next to them is a really profound red (sorry to keep using that word but it seems the most appropriate)… and then something I’ve never had yet…

Y you askin’?

Yep, I was unbelievably lucky to share in a bottle of the 1964 about 17 years ago. To this day one of the two best white wines I have ever had. It followed a 1999 Jadot Batard-Montrachet and just politely murdered it.

The other truly great white wine I have had was the 1985 La Mission Haut Brion Blanc. More like liquid stones than any other wine I have ever had.

Honorable mention:

Vatan Sancerre

Clos de Briords

Dauvissat Chablis

And for sparkling Blanc de Blancs the 1990 Krug Clos des Mesnil.

If any kind soul in the Bay Area would be willing to Coravin me a glass of this mythical LdH Gran Reserva Blanco, I’d be eternally grateful (and I’d be willing to pay, of course). Dying to try it after reading so much about it, recently.

Mmmm. That Tibouren is also “interesting”.

Ruggabellus whites from the Eden Valley. Clean, beautifully constructed “natural” wines that are probably amongst the top in Australia. Simply amazing complexity and evolution in the glass and seem almost indestructible - I’ve had a bottle of the Quomodo open for 2 weeks as an experiment and it was still superb. One order every year that I consider a must. Highly recommended.

Almost all Aussie Rieslings for my palate. Gorgeous.

Kobayashi’s Viognier (a grape I normally haven’t had great luck with), was beyond gorgeous.

As someone who loves LdH and Musar whites I also would recommend seeking out Domaine Le Soula Blanc. Sadly I haven’t had much luck finding it in the United States. But it has a similar oxidative profile.

One more to add: Condrieu

Which one?

The styles in which they are made can be wildly different from each other, and IMO most of them have no place in this thread.

This is an absolutely fantastic thread. I love whites of all kinds (and have enjoyed many of the whites in this thread), but have not spent much time in earnest exploring further. This gives me the inspiration to do so!
