Goldbelly experiences

Oy. At least you don’t need to worry about the ice packs melting.

Too soon?

We have used goldbelly a bit over the past few months:

  • McMoon’s lobster rolls - Very good
  • Zahav Lamb Shoulder Meal Kit - Incredible. All of the sides were great, meat was perfect and easy to prep. Really good value as well considering how much food you get.
  • Buddy’s pizza - My neighbor ordered this and shared. Very average. We make better Detroit style pizza at home.
  • Buttermilk Biscuits from The Grey - Very good, comes frozen so easy to make as needed.
  • Shiitake Mushroom Buns from Momofuku - Good/solid. Not sure I would order again.

Well it finally arrived. Nine days late and at its expiration date. Our daughter contacted Goldbelly and they made it good. We are scheduled to receive a replacement order tomorrow.

Very excited to see that about Zahav lamb! We love Zahav, but are used to eating at the bar because reservations are impossible. Now, of course, there’s no bar seating at all. Also, Zahave is one of the only restaurants in Philly where there is absolutely no BYO. This may be our only chance to have Zahav’s lamb with our wine! Feels kind of dumb shipping less than a mile, though.

It’s well worth it in my opinion and is a fun meal to pair with wine. It says it feeds 6 people but we could have easily feed 10!

Just like when you get it there. We always bring leftovers home. My daughter made it last year from the recipe in his cookbook last year and it was great. Zahav is one of the few restaurants that doesn’t allow BYOB that I am happy to go to whenever.

Snow’s sausage was delicious. Ribs scheduled for tonight. Brisket will probably be next weekend or the week after.

For my last Amex offer I’m wavering between Zahav and Commanders Palace. Leaning towards the former.

I followed Suzanne’s tip and used my credit on the failed bagel venture to order a 6-pack of Bread’s Bakery babka. Whoa! Good stuff. 15 seconds in the Amana does wonders and my lockdown crew is all smiles.

Go with Zahav. In my opinion, Commander’s Palace is largely about the experience, which Goldbelly cannot deliver. The food at Zahav perhaps improved by being able to have it with your own wine.

Thank you Sarah! That is very helpful.

Anyone have recommendations for the pi day sale? After browsing I’m really in the mood for pie.

Ordered a Cannoli pie through Goldbelly from a CT bakery. NOT the bakery’s fault but the package was delayed by a day. The icepacks were completely depleted and the cake was room temp when it arrived.

While not an answer to Jay’s question about pies, Goldbelly has been a nice distraction over the last year, have ordered and enjoyed the following:

  1. Broken Spanish: Chicken Tinga Tamales - Excellent
  2. Emmy Squared: Roni Supreme Pizza - My favorite of the 3 different Detroit-Style pizzas I’ve tried from Goldbelly
  3. Detroit Style Pizza Company: Pretty good, although felt the least like a traditional Detroit style pizza compared to Emily’s and Buddy’s
  4. Buddy’s Pizza: Detroiter Pepperoni Pizza - Good, but prefer the pizza from Emmy Squared. One of the pizzas broke up in transit, making it a bit hard to handle in the oven
  5. Labriola Chicago: Deep Dish Pepperoni and Sausage Pizzas - Excellent
  6. Hattie B’s: The Hot fried chicken (whole bird) was so good I ordered it twice … similar to another poster, really impressed how fried chicken works in this format.

Couple of additional finds over the last year in the ‘Gourmet food shipped frozen’ category

  1. Nuchas Argentine Empenadas: Also available on Goldbelly, but you can order directly from Nuchas - Love these, with Ham & Cheese, Argentine Beef and Italian being our favorites. We order by the pallet, and boxes of these probably take up a third of our chest freezer
  2. Ramen Hero: Burning Love Spicy Tonkotsu - Love this enough to have signed up for a subscription (4 packs per month - gets you free shipping) - Not a lot of great Ramen options near me, so this really hits the spot. There is an excessive amount of plastic packaging, but just saw a post from them that they’re now moving to something much more eco-friendly. Would strongly recommend.
  3. Wulf’s Fish: Ora King Salmon and King Kampachi Collars - The salmon makes for a great sashimi, and the King Kampachi Collars are so easy to cook, just broil them and add salt and some lemon juice. This recipe came in handy - https://www.justonecookbook.com/hamachi-kama/

IMO the Snow’s ribs and brisket were okay but not good enough to order again.

I had a big Russ and Daughthers order delayed two days by the storm, total of 4 days shipping instead of 2. So I knew I wasn’t going to freeze the lox like I had been planning to.

It didn’t matter because, like Jay, the Gaspe was a salty as I’ve ever had any smoked fish and a little leathery. Gravlax wasn’t as salty but dry.

I spoke to them and they suggested to reship, the Gaspe should not be salty and neither should be dry.

Sure enought the second batch was great. Still not quite as wonderful as the LES order, but more because of the beautiful slicing as opposed to standard rectangular strips.

The sturgeon and chopped liver was fantastic.

Moral of the story: if you don’t like the quality from R&D, give them a call and they will make it right.

Momofuku Bo Ssam was amazing, best thing I have tried from Goldbelly. Also liked Welle Made hand pies (very convenient and delicious) and a fun dinner was Xi’an Famous Foods hand-ripped (you rip them) beef noodle dinner. Underwhelming was Pequot’s deep dish pizza (very), and a few things from Russ and Daughters tht were not to my palate. Smoked salmon from Daniel Bouloud, too, excellent but VERY expensive.

We had Slanted Door Pho last night. It was unique enough in the broth and Caramelized onions to make a fun dish. The value is always questionable but I think we are going to start ordering more and think of it like going out which we are still not comfortable taking part of.

What was subpar about your R&D order? If it’s a quality issue, you can call them, and I’d expect them to make it right.

Nothing on their end, really, service-wise or anything (it was delayed but what isnt these days) i just have preferred other styles of smoked salmon and sable. I like smoke and got some double smoked lox from Water Dog (on Goldbelly) that was more my jam. I loved the RD bialys and other things.
