FedEx Is Coming Apart at the Seams

I’ve never once had my ID scanned… just signed for it. I guess i look old enough!

I am likely older than you and nowadays they scan the reverse of my drivers license and require a signature for most alcohol deliveries.

I had an Envoyer delivery today, the driver did scan my ID.

Interesting, I’ve never had either UPS or Fedex ask to see an ID. I wonder if that’s a state requirement.

Here they started a few months ago and they scan it and require a signature - they always arrive when I’m on a work zoom too.

Yep - they have a Zoom sensor in the trucks.

It’s very efficient

It’s probably similar to the cat detector van from the Ministry of Housinge.

Maybe some improvement coming in the future for FedEx? Bloomberg - Are you a robot?

My local FedEx Ground delivery driver (contractor) is a wine box sadist!

I usually ship to my local walgreens for FedEx, but wanted to try, and lo and behold…FedEx driver has twice this week given me the ‘delivery attempted, no one home/business closed’, yet I never saw the truck even pull up and no door tag was left. Really irritated. Even left instructions that they could leave it in front of the house, etc. I’m assuming driver was too lazy to carry a big box or wanted to go home early.

Like I said above, they have FOUR different systems that give you contrasting info. The phone app is the newest and most accurate.

I’ve seen that sort of thing elsewhere, where the skill set to sync up their incompatible platforms isn’t inherent to them. They can invest money and years in each attempt to fix it, either with an internal group or a contractor. Confidence it will be fixed by some deadline is given, then falls flat. Then the next attempt is made.

On the driiver side, shipping volume has skyrocketed and more competitors have entered the market. There’s such a demand for drivers they have to live with C-level performance when their standards had been high. Any organization that expands too fast or has too much turnover faces major fundamental performance challenges.

I got the ‘we missed you’ text a good 10 min or so after the tracking page was already showing ‘delivery exception’.

I called in to the customer support line, and they were totally unhelpful. Apparently they have no way of contacting the driver/notifying/etc. (I had already added notes/ instructions/ my phone number, etc in FedEx Delivery Manager) I asked, basically, what’s to stop this from happening a third day in a row, and the rep said nothing, but I can at least file a claim after 3 tries.

Note that there are at least two separate FedEx delivery systems. FedEx Ground was formed from a purchased company, different warehouses, different drivers (contractors). I’m not sure you can easily contact FedEx Ground directly. If you call FedEx, they would have to send a message to have the FedEx Ground people contact you. FedEx Home seems to use much of the same infrastructure of FedEx Ground except I think they have different drivers who sometimes use their own vehicles (maybe most or all the time).

I’m surprised. FedEx used contractors for Ground and Home and paid them less (and regularly gets sued whether they should be legally classified as employees). But, maybe consolidating the warehouses will save enough money (I would have guessed not). Would simplify contacting them, though.

I’m pretty sure you can still reroute this shipment to Walgreens or a FedEx Print and Ship Center, even when they’ve ‘attempted’ delivery. At least I have been able to do so before.

I just did yesterday and picked it up today after two missed deliveries.

If it makes people feel any better the UPS guy walked up to my door with the “sorry we missed you” tag today. He didn’t knock or ring the bell. I saw him and quickly went outside and yelled for him to get my box. He was not happy. He clearly didn’t feel like schlepping a 12 bottle shipper off the truck.

So I look today on a shipment from WineBid and it looks like FedEx sent the package down to Bloomington, CA which is outside of LA and is sitting there until it gets to me on Monday. Problem is that is wrong direction since I am up in Seattle. Also it is going to in the mid 70’s in Bloomington so what could go wrong…
