We’re going to end up burning Brian.
I have no clue, but retail would be around $500/case. I think people are being wooed by the $5 minimum bid. If you look at past auctions on that site individual bottles of fairly pedestrian wines sold for $10-15ea. Cases anywhere from $50-$150
Good wines, much different story.
Bottom line, don’t expect miracles.
I think this would be very helpful as I am unfamiliar with the area and options.
Any idea how Wells is doing, health wise?
As people have said, the bankruptcy auction recovers money to be distributed to creditors. Doesn’t help Wells.

I wanted to offer an update on Wells as I spoke with him today. We’ve been friends for many years and it was great to hear his voice and hear that he’s doing better.
First off, he wanted to say thank you for the donations to the GoFundMe which has been helpful and allowing him to meet the demands of the medical costs that went along with what happened to him. He still trying to attack that piece of his life and financially recover…and people that have been through this kind of a thing, the medical aftermath can be a financial nightmare.
Physically it sounds like he’s recovered well and is back to trying to earn a living and doing some things in the wine business, with an eye towards more long-term.
The donations page is still alive and so if you have an interest in continuing to help or do something to help, please do. But ultimately know that he’s doing better and he thanks everyone for the support that they showed in different phone calls and emails and other things that have come into him and he’s finally just trying to come up for air so thank you everyone.
A winemaker friend of mine who works in the Hopland area says Wells is managing the Feliz Creek custom crush and storage facility.
I don’t have any recent updates.
If all WBs have agreed not to big against each other, it will be likely on the lower price range for final price though.
If you think we’re the only people who know about this auction think again.![]()
I’m glad there’s been multiple clarifications that the wine being auctioned doesn’t benefit Wells in any way. I’m sure it’s lovely wine and worth bidding on. But as others have suggested I hope anyone bidding on the wine is also willing to make a donation to Wells.
It would feel a bit weird to vulture in on his juice even if he did get a benefit from it.
well, i am hoping. ![]()
I bet he would rather you have it direct than the sad sight of it stacked in cases on the end of a Grocery Outlet aisle marked down publicly to 9.99. At least I know I would.
I won’t be bidding but raising the bid to a fair level shows some respect. All of it ending in a clearance Rack would be depressing.
I’m glad to hear he is back up and working in the industry at least. I still have some mid 2000’s Copain I should probably find.
If someone does get a few cases for a steal a donation would certainly be a nice thing to do to even out the karma.
It’s getting sold whether WBers buy it or not. Why would he prefer or be better off that we not buy some of it?
Realistically he wouldnt, I think the idea being floated of a donation to his gofundme if you buy a case is a nice way of saying “sorry this happened to you, but i appreciate your wine.” Also, buying someones work at auction where its going to pay off their debts can feel awkward when you have a relationship with them whether its professional or personal.
People are really overthinking this. If you want the wine, bid on it. If you don’t, then don’t. This is really not an ethical quandary.
Dude, that’s harsh. Wells has been a contributor to this board over the years.
What does that have to do with whether it’s right or wrong to bid on the wine?
