De Negoce offer (Part 2)

Yawn.

It does sound like a nice Pinot. Any guesses?

Here’s what Google Gemini thinks. Seems plausible.

"The description contains several specific “tells” that help identify the legendary source vineyard in the Russian River Valley (RRV):

The Prime Suspect: Bacigalupi Vineyards

The most likely source for this wine is the Bacigalupi Vineyard. Specifically, the description refers to “gnarled old vines dating back multiple generations” and a “benchmark” status.

  • The History: The Bacigalupi family is legendary for providing the Chardonnay that won the 1976 Judgment of Paris, but their old-vine Pinot Noir (particularly the “Bloomfield” or “Goddard” ranch blocks) is considered a benchmark for the region.
  • The Soil & Location: The mention of “volcanic minerality” combined with the classic RRV “foggy, breezy” and “gently sloped” landscape points toward the Middle Reach or Laguna Ridge neighborhoods. While much of RRV is famous for Goldridge (sandy loam) soil, there are specific pockets of volcanic soil (like the “Red Hill” series) where these legacy vineyards sit.
  • The Price Point: High-end single-vineyard bottlings from Bacigalupi fruit (under their own label or producers like Williams Selyem, Gary Farrell, or Failla) typically retail for $70–$90+, aligning perfectly with the “$70/bottle mark” mentioned in the offer.

Other Strong Possibilities (The “Who’s Who” Sites)

If not Bacigalupi, the description fits a very small list of other “Grand Cru” caliber sites in the Russian River Valley known for “oldest rows” and “gnarled vines”:

  • Rochioli Vineyard: Specifically the “Old Hill” or “West Block” plantings. However, Rochioli fruit is so strictly allocated that it rarely makes its way to a nĂ©gociant like de NĂ©goce.
  • Swan Mansion (Trenton Estate): Known for some of the oldest Pinot Noir vines in the valley. The “gunflint” and “volcanic” descriptors often apply to the rocky, well-drained soils found in the Trenton area.
  • Olivet Lane Vineyard: A historic site (planted in 1975) famous for its “Martini Clone” vines. While it produces the “Burgundian-styled” and “elegant” profile described, the “volcanic minerality” descriptor is less common here than in the Middle Reach sites.

Clues to the Producer

The mention of “Burgundian-styled,” “partially whole-cluster,” and “restrained approach to extraction” suggests a winemaker like:

  • Merry Edwards: (Known for the “pigs & Pinot” marketing, though her style is often more robust).
  • Williams Selyem: The “gold standard” for RRV Pinot.
  • Gary Farrell: Often produces very delineated, elegant versions of these historic vineyards.

Verdict: This is almost certainly Bacigalupi Vineyard fruit, likely surplus from a top-tier producer who typically sells this for $70+, now bottled as de Négoce Lot 586."

Strong possibilities: I agree with Swan Trenton, planted in 1973, have enjoyed Swan PNs for a long time. Porter Creek Old Vine (Hillside Vineyard) off Westside Road a strong possibility. Have enjoyed Porter Creek PNs and Zins over the years.
Disclosure: DId split a case with some friends. I like pigs n Pinot wines- especially with Coleman pork.

Im thinking Swan

In for a case of the 586 (love the old school CPU number, IYKYK).

I was a little conflicted on some of the catch-all terms
Burgundian, forest floor and acid, combining with cola and pigs-n-pinot
something for everyone! But at 13.8% it’s right in my wheelhouse, and given some of the producer guesses, how can you go wrong at $16.58 delivered?? Some of my recent offer purchases at WS and Rochioli are 4x this price for the cheap stuff. Even good-not-great should be a winner at this price. I’m almost never blown away with DN pinot, but so far it’s been good-to-very-good
generally well above serviceable, and $16.58 is a very serviceable price

I think I will try the PN now. Anything else that would be a good deal at 25% off?

Sid,

That discount is for the Bottle Shop, not for the Futures, I believe? :four_leaf_clover::grinning_face:

Hello Scott! Well that would explain why the discount didnt show up in checkout. Oh well, maybe I will look at something else. I think I am going to move to CAM X though after I burn my points up!
