#400 was when Bevan Cellars became Boom Boom. (that was all public in the old threads so no need to mince names nor words here).
Right. But now the term seems to mean something different and more general. Bc all these wines can’t be that producer. So I’m saying that I’ve been wondering the definition of the term myself.
Larry is one of the most genuine people on this board, as well as one of the OGs.
Besides, he owes me a magnum and I have to say these things so I can collect soon ![]()
(no but in all seriousness, Larry is one of those people who truly won’t have any ulterior motives on asking these questions).
Oh I understand now.
#400 and #401 were stylistically somewhat different. I couldn’t tell today which one “boom boom” refers to today.
I think Larry likes to stir the pot (Larry, please correct me if I’m wrong!) but there’s nothing wrong with that and he always seems respectfully impish. I think it’s good to have someone swimming the other direction. You guys should definitely try his wine! I had some of his verbiage blanc a few years ago and I have never tasted more beeswax in a wine in my life. It was almost too much much for me (oh no am I outing myself as AFWE? I don’t even think I am!) But people who like huge white wines will be very happy I think.
All the talk of boom boom in this thread always makes me laugh. I have a friend who uses “boom boom” to refer to people he thinks are dumb. Like caveman-like.
I think the point that I was trying to make above was that behaving impishly as just a regular random boardmember would not be seen as untoward, goodness knows we have enough of them that participate in this thread. However, if you are also “ITB” and behave this way then people might wonder what’s going on.
There’s a reason why you often see “ITB” people on this board behave somewhat differently than regular joes. You’re on a forum with colleagues and current or potential future customers, it would be reasonable to be a bit guarded and circumspect.
I don’t have a problem with Larry, his participation in this thread, or any of that. Just commenting on why this topic has come up at least a few times across the CamX and dN threads.
I’m gonna try to help Cam push some product, because it seems like some new people are checking in wondering what to buy.
6 people, 12 blind wines from the cab sampler. Composite rankings.
I haven’t tabulated all the results yet, but Lot 5 is going to be the big winner. 5 of 6 people put it as their #1 wine (the other put it #3).
(I can say it wasn’t a group think thing as well, because by the 5th wine with kids running around and cooking dinner and chit chatting, people were progressing at their own pace).
I remember Cam sent the email out about how well it was showing, but might still be underrated
.
I’ll post all the results, my personal ranking was Lot 5, Lot 32, Lot 27. But I think Lot 27 will end up in the end, receiving 3 second place votes.
Hope everyone is having a great Thanksgiving!

Here is the run down. Average of all 6 rankings. If variation number is low, there was broad agreement on rankings.
All wines were opened the night before, poured into a decanter, and then back into the bottle.
This was really fun. Thanks for putting together the Cab Sampler, Cam!
I think BOOM BOOM has officially taken on a more formal role since this post. I believe it didn’t specifically refer to Bevan since it popped up (as I recall) on 401, not 400. When it popped up again on 25, I bought 25 and tasted it as soon as I could. Bought a 2nd case that night.
And look, I like both styles. BOOM BOOM and not.
but I think BOOM BOOM is becoming a WineBerseker term slowly (almost like Pobega). I’m sure it could be more formally defined, but it sounds like higher pH and high alcohol are 2 of the necessary components for the mouthfeel/style. To best understand it, I recommend someone gets their hands on both 401 and 25 (and now there is another in the pipeline (Lot 40) who wants to experience “BOOM BOOM” as it has come to be formally defined.
I Pobega’d a 2023 Pezzato Cab the other night…and damn if that isn’t also BOOM BOOM in the best freakin way. Probably beats out both those prior BOOM BOOMs.
awesome to do and share this! One interesting callout is 17 vs 10 given that they’re from the same producer. Curious, did you (and others) still enjoy your lowest ranked wines?
Just a heads up for newer folks stylistically. I didn’t like the only Bevan I ever paid for full price then went ahead and bought 401 because
“Hey, it’s ~$25-30 (I forget) how could I pass up this deal”
Guess what, I didn’t like it either. For me they were both Way over top Napa wines.
Nothing wrong if that’s your thing, but beware if you prefer more structure and less jammy type fruit when this term is being floated. For me personally now it’s generally a pass at any price.
This is such an important thing to say. It’s really not for everyone. But it was like $36-40 on tranche 1 depending on 6 pack or not. I think partly because it was maybe essentially a shiner or 1 step before a shiner, being fully prepared wine. And funny that it received 98-100 points I believe because that just goes to show you how arbitrary points can be.
Look at the top 3 WE wines that just came out. Couldn’t be more different. Saxum, English bubbles, and Mastroberardino Stilema. Legit couldn’t be more different wines and the score is just a number. I think mostly they almost also use scoring and ranking as a platform to highlight whatever they want to highlight.
Lot 17 was high variation, complex, and seemed to have one particular note people didn’t enjoy.
I retasted on Day 3 and thought it showed a bit better. See follow ups below:
Agree with Lot 17 having an unpleasant note to it at present. Someone called it “green wood” which gets pretty close.
Wondering how @Cameron_Hughes would describe it . . .
And no, not trying to stir anything up ![]()

My preferred descriptor for that would be “bat fart”

Fits the emoji hoboWB code. May be a hit brand for the Gen after Gen Z target market (/s) Trademark it!
I really enjoyed the one bottle of #17 that I have had…
I have to say customer support is awesome. Emailed a question and had an answer in under 10 minutes -
Well done!
I had a similar excellent experience today. Support has been great. Much appreciated.
Which Cam X lot was the Bevan?
