Sorry about the shitty quality. Functional cellar. Two small cooling units, one on top of the stairs, one in the pics. The only thing interesting in it is the coffin. About 3 years ago my secretary’s husband asked me if I wanted a 100 year old mahogany coffin. I thought he was joking, so I said “sure!” and lo and behold, he offers it to me when I went over for some cognac. He bought it for $300 bucks. Someone was actually put in it for 20 minutes but the family changed their minds because fo a rip in the lining, 100 years ago, according to the funeral home. So, we gutted it, 3800 clips in it btw, and built some shelves. I didnt like the inside of the door empty, so I had a friend who is an art teacher carve the demon and angel in pine. He made a frame and fitted it in the door.
It has actually shrunk a bit since I loaded it up. Part of that was having all the wine on hand instead of most of it inaccessible in overloaded offsite storage. And part is due to me not buying wine for the past year.
A closet in my basement that I converted into wine storage last year…hold about 400 bottles. I have quite a bit of new arrivals that I need to unbox and rack, so those empty spaces will soon be filled.
The short answer is that I don’t, but my basement stays at a steady 64 degrees and 40% humidity all year long. The bottles that I keep here are destined to be consumed within 2-3 years, so I’m not horribly concerned about it. It’s cool, dark and vibration free. I also have a temperature controlled storage locker at a local wine store where I can probably fit another 200 bottles. This is where I keep the few large format bottles that I own and anything that really needs to be in a proper cellar.
I gave considerable thought to trying to control the environment in this space, but this is perfectly fine for what I need right now.
