2012 Red Burgundy

Seems like most red burg vintages have their own dedicated thread but I can’t seem to find one for 2012. I have bought a fair amount of ‘12’s but have not tried one yet. I’m thinking maybe the first one I try would be a Chezeaux/Ponsot Griotte Chambertin as I have a few of them.

Any experiences anyone has had with 12’s, general reflections on the vintage, comparisons to other vintages, etc?

We did a 2012 tasting in November 2025. Most wines showed a slightly dry tannin structure and only 2 (Mortet Chambertin and Groffier Bonnes Mares if my memory serves me well) showed enough juiciness of the fruit to be really enjoyable now. Yes I believe that most of them will get better but I’d rather drink 2013 or 2014 now

If only there was a thread where people discussed red burgundy vintages…

12 is excellent vintage but a lot of the wines aren’t nearly ready to open at this point, will wait 3-5 at least.

I love the vintage and was very impressed by the intense abundant fruit (from cask), almost hiding the tannic structure.
Many wines are still a bit closed - with a tannic edge … so I leave the GCs waiting … (a Rb DRC last spring was impressive but no real pleasure to drink).
A few Village wines were more open …

High hopes for the vintage but patience necessary
(better GCs from 2030 …)

It’s not the worst vintage to open right now, but it’s still young obviously. Tâche was fabulous recently with a lengthy double decant, but 01/02/06/07 are all way more ready.

The only 12 I tried recently went into lockdown about 30 mins after opening. Very small sample size, I know.

It’s a very varied vintage but I have had good luck with it so far.

There can be a lean or dry character, but there’s a kiss of fruit on the better wines that have me hoping my bottles may blossom into 2001-like surprises. I adore that vintage.

Weather was an issue in Cote de Beaune, so I tend to stick to CdN.

I have been repping 2012s for at least a year now. A chezeaux/Ponsot chambolle charmes was absolutely in the zone (for my palette) this past June. And a d’angerville taillepieds and caillerets have been delicious.

I can imagine there’s a bunch of bottles that aren’t ready and I wouldn’t trust lesser producers to make something special but I’ve been loving the vintage.

Reminds me of 2010 with a bit more pure fruit.

I don’t think 12s have as much fruit as 10 or are anywhere near as good. I do think it’s a bit better vintage than people are giving it credit for, though. I would probably classify it as “very good” and the best of the 11–14 vintages, though.

As I said earlier, most red burg vintages have their own dedicated thread. I think it makes it easier to search for with the search function if a person is trying to find more concentrated info on the specific topic rather than having to fish it out of a much more general thread that now has a couple thousand postings.

If only there was a feature that let you search for whatever you wanted to…

Come to think of it, I’ve got a 2012 Chezeaux/Ponsot CM Charmes downstairs. That will be the first one I’ll open.

Did you make a tasting note?

Yes but for the chezeaux version. Jpp10780 on CellarTracker.

Pretty sure that’s the exact same wine; metayage.

So is it not strictly enforced then (or strictly adhered to) that when the producer actually owns the section of the vineyard, he labels the corresponding bottles as ‘Domaine ______’ vs Maison or maybe one or two other conventions?

Here the label says Domaine Ponsot but I don’t believe they own a section of CM Charmes (not according to Jasper Morris book). Is this the same kind of sharecropping arrangement as with their Griotte?

Ahh ‘metayage’, that’s the term…

I opened a 12 Fourrier GC Aux Echezeaux the other day. In a great place.

Michael, case in point: only 2-3 months back on a larger, more general thread several folks (me too) had a discussion about Griotte Chambertin and there were maybe 15-20 postings made. Lots of great info. Now when I go to the search tab and search for ‘Griotte Chambertin’ I can’t find that discussion anywhere using the search function. Seems like if there was a dedicated thread titled ‘Griotte Chambertin’ it might show up a lot brighter in the search results.

If you use google you’ll be able to search better than using the built in search engine.

Quite sure - exactly the same wine (also the same plastic stopper), only different label - and cheaper.
