The thread about Eric Asimov’s favourite under-$100 2007 Napa Cabs makes me curious about what board member Napa Cab preferences would be, if asked. So I’m asking. Please list your favourites, regardless of style, but only list those which NORMALLY retail sub-$100 (not the Screaming Eagle you got for $50 in a garage sale!). If you care to name specific vintages and the reasons for your choices that would be nice too, but not necessary. I’m trying to get back in touch with Napa Cabs after a several year absence and will research the names which come up as many will likely be unfamiliar to me. Thanks in advance.
Probably Lewelling Wight, Larkmead, Napanook, O’Shaunnessy or Lail J Daniel (a blend). My two favorites overall trend just above $100 most of the time: Dominus and Ridge Monte Bello.
I’ll second Rivers Marie and KL. I’d also add Drinkward Peschon. Also, even though I’ve only had one vintage of it ('07), I was really impressed with Emerson Brown.
I’d have added Lewelling, but they screwed the pouch with the '07s - yes both the regular and the wight. Extremely over ripe and in the stewed territory. I even emailed the winery asking about a change of direction, but they never got back to me. Ok, rant over.
Larkmead - the '08 Firebelle I had the other day was killer ($60)
Anderson Conn Valley Reserve - just about any vintage. The '06 has been available for ridiculous prices…$30-35.
As Mike mentioned above, Ladera is another great one for my tastes, both the Lone Canyon and the Howell Mtn.
The '07 Lewelling mentioned above is downright frightening. Too bad, as I’ve liked it in other years. Seemed wildly out of character this time around.
