WineSpies.com (Wine Spies) Deal Discussion thread

I’m trusing the enablers here and grabbed a couple!

Here’s an AI explanation of it:

AFWE is a tongue-in-cheek acronym for Anti-Flavor Wine Elite, used to describe wine lovers who prefer subtle, complex, traditional “Old World” styles over the bold, oaky, fruit-forward “New World” wines often favored by critics like Robert Parker. It playfully labels those who enjoy restrained wines as “elite” or “anti-flavor” compared to “fruit bomb” wines, embracing the term to show preference for nuance over intensity,

I guess the opposing POV would be called the Boom Boom Brigade?

Boom Boom Brigade is incredible - gonna have to remember that one :joy:

There’s a “flag”ship Medlock Ames in the store this morning. It’s not really a wine that I can find available elsewhere so while $100, it seems like could be a fun exploration of a winemaker top cuvee. I think it was very small production.

Are you buying? I love a good discounted flagship…

A single bottle. Trying to be selective with single bottle choices from these guys. The only thing I’ve bought multiples of is the Chiron Bolt of Cloth which was really nice at $65. Not like a crazy value, but a really really nicely made wine with a lot of complexity and right on the edge of Boom Boom without being actually boom boom. Might be one of the more perfectly balanced Napa Cabs I’ve had (outside Pezzato and weirdly I also had a Corison Kronos this year that was pretty perfect but closer to AFWE).

Careful. This can still mean 15.1. also could have been 16+ potential abv then watered back. Can still have overripe characters while being lower alcohol

I think the winemaker is important here. I believe the write up stated that this is a Jean Hoefliger wine…right or wrong, I tend to think of him as a boom boom guy (regardless of the abv), so I try to taste his stuff before committing. In this case since I can’t taste first, it’s an easy pass.

I grabbed 2 excited to try it in 7 to 10 years :joy:

For anyone who gets the ‘deep cover’ offerings, the last bravante bottle I got was fantastic, it was also 2018.

I was considering the Bravante but the high price and having just blown out my budget on 4 bottles of Stuhlmuller Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Barrel Selection Alexander Valley 2023 at LB convinced me not to bite. I’ve bought 3 of their Trios before from WS and seem to remember that they’re pretty good.

Yeah good wine but nothing to get fomo over. I enjoy Philip Titus’ wines A LOT so it was a no brainer for me

FWIW, I think you made a good call on the Stuhlmuller. I had the 2021 Stuhlmuller Estate Cab and thought it was excellent. 2023 vintage :white_check_mark:. Barrel selection :white_check_mark:. One would assume the good vintage and select production is better than the Estate.

A few months ago I bought 6 of Stuhlmuller Vineyards Zinfandel Dry Creek Valley 2023 from LB and tried 1 bottle so far. It was quite good but still closed so have put them into storage. The cabs are going into aging as well especially since they’re '23. Probably have to wait until '32 for them.

Sale alert! 2023 Krutz Family Cellars Beckstoffer Vineyard George III Cabernet Sauvignon Napa is now going for $55 on Wineslash. I just bought a bottle. If interested, I wouldn’t delay, because they frequently raise the price after a few days or a week or so.

Anyone have any thoughts on the 08 Cab currently up?

not a very inspiring description. seems like its past its prime
