WineSpies.com (Wine Spies) Deal Discussion thread

Just 4-5 interesting stuff… I did get 2 Kelly Fox 2 Le Bon Pasteur and one Vivaltus (I’m really curious about this last one)

Does anyone have any feedback on the “Le Bon Pasteur”?

At 20% off the Drew is reasonable.

I haven’t been buying the bin ends in previous years but this time found a wine I must have missed or just didn’t bite on when it first came out (Immortal Estate 2019 ‘Slope’ Cabernet Sauvignon) so bought 1. Also, the Faust Pact is above my budget of $65 - $75 so I didn’t buy it when it came out at $85. Surprisingly, it was still available at 5 am on day 3 so I bought for about $68. Other than those 2, everything else I had either bought before or wasn’t interested in.

I thought about those but my cup overfloweth at the moment. I thought the best deal was the aglianico. Thats the top wine from one of the top two producers from an epic vintage. It has like no traction in the states, but those are great wines. Very different than drinking cab. More akin to Nebbiolo but darker.

My experience with Aglianico is seeing VJB aglianico at Grocery Outlet for $7 or $8 a bottle and buying a case of it. It’s $50 at the winery. The winery says this can age up to 15 years. I bought the 2015 and still have a few bottles left. It’s holding up well, though the tannins have tamed somewhat and maybe as a result, it has a somewhat sweet flavor. VJB seems to specialize in these unusual grape varieties.

I rarely buy Pinot, but the 97 JD score and MSRP of $155 snagged me. it appears to be in its prime drinking window too.

2016 Lerner Project RMS, made by Russell Bevan, is in the store for $99 - regularly $200

Today’s classified should be fairly easy to guess with all the clues. I don’t have the depth of wine knowledge many of you have, so I’ll do some searching. I’ll bet one of you can guess exactly what it is.

Turnbull Reserve. Good price, but as their style doesn’t often suit me, it’s an easy pass.

That’s what my search turned up too. What kind of style does it have that doesn’t appeal to you? The reviews say it’s soft, which I don’t prefer, but I’ll likely buy a bottle. Just too good of a price and usually out of my budget.

I believe they are more classically styled cabernet. Reviews are good but I also think the style doesn’t suit me. If you tend AFWE, I get the sense it could be a positive.

I have too often found them overdone- boom boom wines. A coworker was a big fan and they would also find their way into our double blind tastings once in a while. On more than a couple of occasions a few of us called them as zinfandel before the bags came off.

If this is accurate, perhaps they have changed their style since I have last tasted them. I lean more AFWE than boom boom, so perhaps I need to try a few.

Always liked Turnbull. I’m in.

It’s 14.1 abv. Shouldn’t be a monster. I don’t see direct referencing of the pH but I imagine it is more middle 3s than close to 4.

I had to look up this acronym. I got Army Future Warfighting Experiments and African Federation of Women Entrepreneurs but eventually found it. I went for 1 bottle so will soon find out if I’m AFWE.

I too have no clue what AFWE means.

But I gather it means understated wines.

In for a couple Turnbull Reserves - always enjoy this one for the standard price point. No brainer at this price.
