Wine You Keep Rebuying Again and Again?

I buy and rebuy a lot of the same wines, like Gonon, Sociando, Bedrock Zin, Baudry Chinons, Michel Chablis, Raffault, etc., but a wonderful example of one that I buy and drink with great regulatory is the Clos de La Roilette Griffe du Marquis, Fleurie. Year in and year our such an excellent, vibrant drink that plays so well with so many dinner options. Love it’s freshness and the level of complexity that you often don’t see in wines of $35. Plus, while they drink well young, they age beautifully. Had another 2021 last night, just gorgeous stuff.

I have trouble understanding this. Having a case doesn’t mean you have to drink it all the time. If you buy a case and drink one a year over 12 years, how can that possibly be boring?

I was specifically talking about everyday wines. Even with wines that do age, 4-5 bottles have always been enough. If I had gone the case route, I wouldn’t have the variety I do of 2005 red Burgundy or German Riesling.

Oh yeah, Bedrock Evangelho Heritage Wine.

Sabelli-Frisch Bund Riesling and Mariedam White Zin

While I don’t buy any wine year in and out, that one would be on my short list if I did.

I age my every day wines for longer than most, I think.

But I don’t find drinking a few bottles a year (or more in some cases) boring at all.

I sigh a little bit when I hear the “I don’t buy cases because I like variety,” thing because it implies those of us who do buy cases don’t like variety. Definitely not the case here! We drink more than 100 different wines a year! Now capacity constraints do come into play for sure, but quantity and variety don’t need to be mutually exclusive if you have the space and drink with some regularity.

All the repeats have now become over the comfort zone financially, so looking for new discoveries.

Merry Edwards Sauvignon Blanc. I buy it by the case and keep in the fridge as my house white. When I finish the last bottle I get another case

Can’t go wrong with that one. Always feels good knowing there’s a chilled bottle waiting, sounds like the perfect house white setup to me.

Pepiere Briords; Lauer Barrel X; Vincent Ribbon Ridge Pinot

Priced out: Produttori

No longer available: ESJ Rocks and Gravel; Clos Roches Blanche Cuvee Pif.

Looking for: inexpensive classic Bordeaux (yes, I’ve been reading the multiple threads)

I buy the Tempier and Arnot-Roberts roses year in and year out. They’re our go to summer daytime / bbq wines. I also find myself buying the Produttori del Barbaresco wines on most releases. I can’t let a year go by without grabbing more of the Kobayashi whites either.

I think the entry level Produttori is still a pretty good value when you can find it for $40, but the Riservas have creeped up quite a bit in price the past few years. Used to be ~$65 and now they’re pushing $90.

Absolutely. Since the 2016 vintage I’ve purchased every vintage since, so I guess that should be added to my list!

Perhaps I’ve not been diligent enough in my occasional searches but I’ve not found the normale at $40 on the east coast and shipping cross country adds $5/bottle. Still a good buy but not constant repeat for me. I’ll seek out some of Sara’s alto Piemonte gems instead!

I didn’t imply any such thing. I’m only talking about my situation. I do drink on a regular basis. I don’t do a dry month because of my age (71). Life is too short to waste whatever time is left and do a dry month. I know you do. To each his/her own. Nothing right or wrong either way.

Last full case I purchased? 1981 Ch. Lèoville-Las Cases when it was released. Since then, I’ve consciously kept my bottles per wine puchases to 4-5 with very few exceptions.

Not only capacity constraints, but monetary ones, too! And age! I could store around 1325 bottles. I have a couple of hundred less than that, but it still feels like a lot. Mortality tends to rear its ugly head a bit more often now than in years past. That being said, I passed all my tests last month for my yearly checkup. I do thank my Dad for passing on his genetics (well, except for the loss of hair…)

Great lineup! Briords and Barrel X are always reliable. Sad about Rocks & Gravel and Cuvee Pif, those were special. I’m also on the hunt for a solid, affordable Bordeaux. Let me know if you find any hidden standouts.

Totally fair. I’m quite fortunate to have more than one local shop at $40 here in socal.
