Will the Real Sensory or any of the cheaper alternatives be part of berserkers day?
I tried the Conterno glass in Barolo earlier this year and really liked the glass. Nice weight and not too thin/ fragile to intimidate me on breakage. Trying decide if I should wait for a sale. Prefer to buy only 2.
I donāt think Roberto is a Berserkerday businessā¦
Kind of a joke, but kind of serious. Berserkerday is independent small businesses. Youāre not going to find big name brand stuff on sale.
Thanks for the quick reply!
I am new to the forum, learning
What do you mean by āany of the cheaper alternatives?ā Grassl and Glasvin both have a BD presence. If those are on your list, they may have something. Iām just not sure what you are considering an alternative to the Conterno. Iāve personally never liked the aesthetics of the Conterno, or any of the exaggerated tulip-shaped glasses for that matter. With the caveat that I have not drank out of it and could be swayed it if totally blew me away.
I picked up two Grassl 1855s on the BF sale and have been using those exclusively the last week or two. Good glasses. I think the smaller opening and slightly steeper-angle sides focus the aromas better than my benchmark Zalto Bordeaux Iāve been using for many many years. Have a hunch that the Zaltos may end up being a little more durable though, will see.
If someone in the Raleigh / Durham / Chapel Hill area wants to split a 4-pack of Conterno Sensory glasses from RWC so we can save 50 bucks, PM and let me know, will go ahead and order those too.
There are Sensory Conterno knock offs that look substantially similar. Grassl and GV would not apply as they have their own shapes. Except maybe the abomination that is the Fuā¦
I was thinking that there was at least one shape by one of those two brands that was, um, similar. I could be thinking of the Fuā¦
Something else just resurfaced this topic (not me) but I see I replied a few back and wanted to follow up. In addition to the Grassl 1855s, I also picked up 2 of the Conterno Sensory glasses immediately after posting, so I thought Iād add a few thoughts in retrospect.
To me, the Conterno glasses show the most ādetailā or āaccuracyā in a wineās aroma. But I am not a fan of the rather bulbous shape, and donāt like whites out of them as much. They are still balanced in the hand, but to me the overall shape makes them a bit of an outlier. The Grassls on the other hand tend to flatter wines the mostā¦along the lines of what I posted before, the shape tends to accentuate the aromas. The Zalto Bordeaux I have are finished a bit better than the Grassls, but the 1855s have displaced them as the glasses I tend to reach for first for reds. For whites itās 50-50.
You really canāt go wrong with any of these, assuming you like the shape and āfeel in the handā of the Sensory glasses.
Probably like many Berserkers Iāve got too many glasses having gone down this rabbit hole of optimum glass selection. If I had to do it all over again Iād buy a good number of the Grassl Liberte for the vast majority my wine consumption. Iāve found this glass so versatile for the wines I drink and the way I drink them. It works for aromatic whites, rich deep or aged whites, sparkling wine and Champagne, modestly aromatic reds like zin blends and many Italian reds, pinot-based and red Burgundy (provided the pour is modest), is good enough for the way I taste most of my cab-based wines, and is my absolute favorite for nebbiolo-based wines including Barolo.
Iād probably supplement the quiver only with a few larger glasses like the Grassl Cru and 1855 for optimizing my very top and favorite cab-blend, syrahs, or rhone blends that are less frequently consumed.
I have more glasses than I care to admit from all of Zalto, Grassl and Glasvin (as well as Ridels, etc, though those only see use at parties). I have 6+ of Universal, Bordeaux and Burgundy from all 3 brands as well as other tons of specialty glasses like Grassl Mineralite, Zalto Champagne, Fu Glasvins, etc.
Honestly 9/10 times I go for a universal and just typically fill with ~3oz or so at a time. All of them are great ā Zalto Uni, Grassl Liberte and Glasvin OG. Everything from Grand Cru White Burgundy to Cali Cab shows well in all 3 of them. I mainly do it because theyāre whatās clean and hanging at the wet bar (so I donāt have to wash out any cabinet dust), but I also donāt think Iām really losing out by doing so.
Zalto Champagnes are awesome for one specific purpose, though. If you want everyone at a large gathering to share a single bottle of special Champagne to start, you can split a single bottle 15/16 ways at around 1.5oz per person, and the pours donāt look stingy in the glass.
I have a lot of glassware but basically use grassl cru and grassl tasting glass for everything. Thatās what I have in my stem case.
These are what I use at the moment, and this is both correct and pretty funny, had not thought of this.
Iāve got Conterno Sensories, Glasvin Fu, Grassl 1855s, and others, but really my go to 95% of the time is the Grassl Liberte. If I just had a bunch of those and no other glasses, I would be perfectly happy.
I use, almost exclusively, my Grassl LibertĆ© and Grand Cru glasses. The LibertĆ© for my younger wines and Grand Cru for those that have shed their baby fat. And I absolutely love the āfeelā of both glasses, in the hand.
Steve, get some Glasvin Kane glasses if you like the Liberteā¦yes, of course Iām pimping my own design, but I do think itās solid and maybe has a bit more range than the Liberte.
That said, I still roll out my Grassl 1855s for big bad reds, and Iāll rock the FU with a special burgundy or the couple Grassl Crus I havenāt yet broken.
I agree! The Grassl glass is special. Love the 1855.
Yep, my āotherā glass (besides the Grassl) is the Gabriel Glas Gold, of which I have exactly . . . two.
I have some ggg, but they are too small for me for anything except champagne.
