Recently visited with Paul Blanck. What a great person he is. And a top vigneron also.
I have the 2014 and 2017, but haven’t opened either yet.
I had a killer experience with the 2019 Falkenstein Meyer Nepal Spatlese a couple weeks ago and am looking for other bottles similar to it. Anyone have reccomendations either from Falkenstein, or anyone really?
The best Falkenstein, IMHO, and the best vintage. (It’s actually a Spätlese Feinherb, FWIW).
Ha, thanks, I got tired of typing the whole thing out…
The Falk Spätlese are really delicious as well. Its strong suit, I think.
Been enjoying reading the other thread about the ‘judgement of New York’ and figured I’d open an flx riesling last night
I’ve had the Weimer estate riesling many times but this was my first time with the bio. First impressions is there is a ton more going on in this wine than their basic bottling - orchard fruits and a strong herbal note on the nose I’m reading as oregano and also a spice to it like sandalwood that was pretty unique and interesting
On the palate the acid is not integrated at all and it was really sharp at first but the fruit is there. Perhaps this is a bit shut down at the moment, I have about 1/3 of the bottle left I’ll see if it’s better on day 2 tonight
Small anecdote: I tasted with Max 2 weeks ago - on a Friday afternoon. We got extremly lucky because he just came back from restaurant Schanz (***) where he had shown verticals of his wines in order to get them on the wine list. We got to taste a whole range going back to his first trocken (2014 or 2016?) - I don’t take notes, but the evolution is obvious: from his first dry wines with a bit of residual sugar, to bone-dry, electric riesling in 2023. Prices also reasonable still, and he is very open and welcoming.
Also, you will always have tourists dropping in, but they typically stick with the Geierslay wines (the family estate), and generally prefer pinot blanc, sauvignon (al at <10 EUR).
The new MFW is out with the first look on 2024. Sounds like a lot to get excited about. They had lots of love for Schaefer, Richter, Vollenweider and Falkenstein, especially Gisela, which they gave a 97 to… can’t remember the last time I saw them score a kabi that high.
2020 was a really warm vintage that produced some wines with really concentrated, interesting fruit profiles. I don’t think they have the longest-term aging potential, but it’s been interesting to see them progress.
I had a couple Wiemer 2020s this year that did require a good amount of air to come back to life, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they were shutting down.
What is pricing over there for Max’s wines?
I sell them in France for € 20/22/26 Kabi/Spat/Trocken.
Trockens 25e. Kabinett 18e. So direct similar to the prices Russel charges.
Wow. I paid $45 USD for the '21 trockens.
Paid 52 for the Pinot
edit - it was actually 45, score!
I’ll pay you twice that for a bottle
The pinot was sold out!
I wish I had bought more! I definitely will next year if I have the chance again
There’s a bunch of Kilburg on Winebid right now at insultingly low pricing. If I wasn’t trying to pare down, I’d buy it all…
I did just in the past 6 months. 12 bottles in all, 10 Kabinett and two 2022 Spatlese. 2021s and 22s. Prices ranged from $15-20 with one wine at $25.
Friends and I feel Kabinett is the sweet spot for Kilburg (no pun intended). After tasting the 2022 lineup (Goldtropfchen and Ohligsberg Kab, Spat and Trocken), we felt Trocken was the weakest. We like acidity as much as the next guy, but these were too shrill.
