Which Riesling are you drinking?

How was this?
I regularly buy JS trockens as daily drinkers, but haven’t had the “Edith Elisabeth”.

Indeed, Max explained he is looking for super, bone-dry riesling in his trocken. 2022 is not the greatest year in the mosel. I tried 2023, and it was good enough to buy some

Given that we are discussing Max’s wine: we had a picknick on top of the Ohlisberg right before our visit to him - can recommend, it’s a location you can fin easily on google maps, and the road up there is perfect. And Max’s set-up is literally at the bottom of the hill. PS we had lunch with a Haart Riesling, not a Kilburg one

I only tried the 23s but I thought the trockens were incredible - I will admit that im an absolute acid fiend though lol

Purchased at the winery in December 2016 and opened my 1st bottle just last week. A classic Alsatian mountain riesling that amazingly elevated into a great-drinking apex at Day 3.

2014 Henry Fuchs Kirchberg de Ribeauville Riesling Grand Cru.

I had most of the bottle last night. Good zip to it and slightly sweet.

I just now learned about the post-KR ‘garage’ project where Bernd Philippi retained a portion of Saumagen and made this wine together with Stefan Knipser. So was happy to open 2017 Saumagen GBR Kallstadter Saumagen Spätlese trocken and find a different interpretation of the vineyard from what I know chez KR.

Bright fresh juicy green herbal fruits, showing a bit of evolution, but also some oily richness and fine layered depth. A very nice combination that is maybe even better on the second day. Bravo.

Yes, but let’s talk about that :eagle:

??? If I see the label correctly, it’s being attacked by the letters. Not sure??

We touched on this briefly before

Ah, ok. KR famously leaving VDP. That makes sense. I was worried it was getting political in terms of the eagle being a national symbol of Germany.

Prum 2001 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese AP 19 02.
Beautiful wine, still quite young, sweet with balancing acidity, and a long finish.
Can’t say this has changed a lot since a bottle from probably 4 or 5 years ago. Just delicious!!

IMO, pretty difficult to do better than this.

Hofgut Falkenstein - Herbert Kabinett Feinherb 2023

Lemon, green apple, peach, herbs, white flowers, spices, smoky, mineralic. Fresh and juicy, medium body, balanced and long lasting. Developing nicely, with potential :clinking_glasses:

First from a case of this, but a bit disappointed - very herbal, touch of bitterness even, just not very composed. Not sure how much of this is vintage related, will leave the rest for a few years and see if they come together more.

The nickname Herbert designates a small parcel of old vines atop the hill, and not far from Meyer Nepal.

Ah nice thanks for the insight Lars! I am a fan of Niedermenninger Herrenberg i have to admit  beside Falkensteins wines I also like the feinherb Stefan Müller makes there.

My pleasure, Gregor. Falkenstein produced three 2024 Herrenberg Kabinett feinherbs: Meyer Nepal, Onkel Peter, and Palm.

Had something completely unknown tonight, on a list with lots of natural wines as the server steered me away from a few other options towards the 2018 W.E. Frank Niersteiner Ölberg Riesling Große Lage. I’ll admit I was skeptical, being unfamiliar with the producer, and hearing that it was aged in several different types of barrels, including some new.

However, for 2018 wine from the Rheinhessen, with that kind of treatment, it had lots of focused mineral elegance (likely from the vineyard). There was sufficient power and oily depth (maybe suggestive powers of the name), and it was a very good match with many dishes. Didn’t necessarily scream Riesling because of that oak treatment, so it may have been a good offering for my white Burgundy-loving companion. But also plenty of fresh snap for me to enjoy.

Not something I will chase, but exceeded my skeptical expectations.
