Really next level at Ludes. For me, when you crack open a bottle of Ludes you just know immediately that its Ludes. I cracked open their entry level “Mosel” the other night and for sub $20 it was such a treat. Enjoyed poolside on a hot day in SoFlo.
They are available in MA through Ideal Wine as the wholesaler. They have DI’d them for about 2 years now. Same importer as Falkenstein
Too late! Cellar full!

2020 Riesling Wachau DAC Ried Bruck - Grabenwerkstatt
Deeply impressed by its energy
The Spätlese Auction Doctor Witwe Thanisch Erben Thanisch 2015 AP 6 is really good now, though more of an Auslese with lots of botrytis.
As @MaciejK said: Not universally. When it comes to libraries, however, his is beyond reproach.
You mean there’s a lot of unsold wine? ![]()
Just opened an Oliver’s 2019 (Edna Valley) from Tatomer. Good American Riesling, no petrol notes, lots of acidity, and really nice lemon-lime notes that lead into a respectably long finish.
Really spectacular food wine at lazy Betty. Paired with two impressive examples midway through tasting menu. The reminded me of an old school auslese trocken. Mosel petrol and limestone. Petrichor and honey. Fully mature to me. So resembled old auslesen. Mid palate l was a tad austere but finished strong. Very big wine but worked well in the company
The 2010 acid… chef’s kiss
This easily qualifies as the strangest Riesling I’ve had so far, and I can sum it up in one word: beer. Actually, to be more precise, lager. It tastes like a flat, fruity, lager. Not bad, just…weird.
Refermented?
Maybe?
Not really sure what that tastes like, but it makes sense. Quite yeasty.
That’s what it tastes like.
Dr. H. Thanisch 2017 Bernkasteler Badstube:
This is really an excellent wine. It’s got such weight and drama on the palate with a silky and creamy texture. It borders on histrionic, given its vivid, decadent glazed pear, lemon curd, orange, and grapefruit notes, yet somehow maintains simultaneous quiet, stoic poise. Any opulence proves ephemeral - swept away by the high, refreshing acidity and its salty, mineral intense shadow - but a subtle and lingering kiss of sweetness is left behind. I really enjoy the petrol in this wine, which has an unsoiled baby diaper plastic expression, in addition to the more expected gas station notes. This is an outrageous QPR.
When do you like to open your Spatlesen and Auslesen?
I have had a a fair amount at 20 to 30 years of age, and an equal amount at 2-3 years of age, but only a few in this in-between phase. I am finding myself surprised how well this small number is showing.
Auslese tends to show well at almost any age IMO. It’s just more interesting with age, at least to me. It can be lusciously delicious at any time though.
Two incredibly unique Rieslings last night. The 2021 Immich Briedeler Herzchen is from a new parcel across from Marienberg. It had a crazy honeysuckle character but was close to being dry. Stunningly unique wine! I am buying more…
And the Julien Renard is to me one the best examples of German Riesling made in a natural style. It is just a bundle of joy. Drank while listening to Karriem Riggins DJ at Nublu! Life was good!
2015 JB Becker Wallufer Walkenberg Spätlese trocken was nicely matured and golden, entering into some interesting textural moments. But, a bit heavy and dull on the midpalate as these Becker wines often are. I guess I should learn that the style is just not my favorite.
2019 Bründlmayer Steinmassl was more refreshing, lively, herbal, racy, juicy, and fun.
love me some young auslese, and would agree with wine critic Cyrus Redding when he wrote in 1883 regarding Riesling that," when iced in summer, nothing can be more grateful".
